The 10 Best Things to Do in Srinagar, India

January 15, 2018 Yuk Petri

Srinigar is a modern waterworld, dominated by Dal Lake and its twisting waterways, tree-lined Nagin Lake, and the Jhelum River. Engulf yourself in local culture by embracing your sea legs and renting one of the wooden boats called shikaras for a daytime or twilight cruise. On land, stroll through the terraced hillsides of the 400-year-old Mughal Gardens, created by Emperor Jehangir for his wife, and shop for indigenous crafts like hand-woven silks and embroidered shawls.

If you are in Kashmir then Gulmarg is a must see place, it is the highest point there covered with snow and beautifully serine, you can enjoy skiing or other winter sports if you know how to, other than that drink hot chai(tea with milk) in one of the cafes and enjoy the beautiful scenery, you can also take the Gondola to first or second level of the mountain, important advise : as soon as you arrive to the place don't listen to any one offering tours or taking you to the cable car station(Gondola) it is much better if you walk yourself, it is only few minutes

Dal Lake

Reviewed By Amit S

Dal lake is large. it has a perimeter of about 22 kms. It contains a whole community within it with shops, vegetable production, etc.
There are over 1,200 houseboats here. They are stationary, anchored on to small Islands within the lake. Typically, the owner of a houseboat has his own house on these Islands just behind hs houseboat.
The market on the lake is open all day and has stuff lke handicrafts, clothes, medicine, tea, spices, etc. The vegetable market though opens for about 2-3 hrs in the morning. There are also floating restaurants (usually fast food and street food).
If you are sitting on the deck of the houseboat you will be pestered by vendors of various products who will keep floating along the lake. The keep pestering you when you are on a shikara ride. But it's all good fun.
Opt for a long ride which takes you to char chinar island and through the market.
When you come here during early season (early march), you are likely to have the whole houseboat to yourself. The houseboat owners tend to be friendly and some of them are very garrulous. You enjoy your stay more. I don't think it will be that much fun when all four rooms are occupied. Likely to be a very cramped space, then.

Reviewed By TuhinaPanja - Bengaluru, India

I am very fond of any religious place, and when its about visit to Jama Masjid how can I miss this. This is situated in Nowhatta Srinagar in the middle of the city. This place has glory in it, with very nice architecture which very well maintained I must say. The place is very huge and there are three main entrances gate, and has a beautiful Fountain in the middle of this mosque. The interior was awesome and supported by huge wooden pillars, very neat and clean. The prayer hall is very huge. Do not miss this historical glory of Kashmir.
