The 10 Best Things to Do in Sifnos, Greece

October 3, 2017 Myesha Cogley

Sifnos (Greek: Σίφνος; the spelling Siphnos is obsolete in English but still by convention often used to refer to the island in ancient times) is an island municipality in the Cyclades island group in Greece. The main town, near the center, known as Apollonia (pop. 869), is home of the island's folklore museum and library. The town's name is thought to come from an ancient temple of Apollo on the site of the church of Panayia Yeraniofora. The second-largest town is Artemonas (800), thought to be named after an ancient temple of Apollo's sister-goddess Artemis, located at the site of the church of Panayia Kokhi. The village of Kastro (118), was the capital of the island during ancient times until 1836. It is built on top of a high cliff on the island's east shore and today has extensive medieval remains and is the location of the island's archeological museum. The port settlement, on the west coast of the island is known as Kamares (245).

Church of the Seven Martyrs

Reviewed By sdothbc - Hamilton, Canada

I'm lumping a few things into this church review, as I think all of Kastro is beautiful and a must visit, and it's so small that I would say seeing the catholic church (St. Anthony's), the Acropolis, the museum, the three sarcophagus, the small medieval streets and this church are all part of the same experience. This church is the crown jewel though, both for the views of the church from the surrounding area, the views from the church of the surrounding area, and if your even a little adventurously inclined, the path down to the rocks below and the views from there. I took the 7:20 am bus from Kamares, and spent about three hours in kastro before heading back. Definitely worth the trip!

This outstandingly beautiful monastery is flanked by the sea on both sides. The chapel itself is out of this world and the swimming off the rocks superb in crystal clear waters. My favourite swimming spot on Sifnos. Not to be missed!

We happened to get on the wrong bus and spoke to some people on their way to Faros who said it had two Beaches and chapel to visit. We arrived late in the day and had a lovey sum n the bay, snorkelled and I fund some ld poetry sheds that I donated to a beachside resident. The local restaurant provided us with some take away fried potatoes as a snack while we soaked up the last rays of sun which sets stunningly over the Mountains to the west. The bus service to Apolliania was good and I would recommend anyone to pay a visit.

Sifnos is an island for hikers. If you just want a short hike from Apollonia to the very interesting hamlet of Castro or you want a demanding hike, you will find both. We did both last October.

Vathi Beach

I have travelled all over Greece but I have no recollection of places with buildings exactly on the seashore... Not only is this ugly, but also illegal according to the Greek Building Regulations... I hope one day all these monstrosities will be demolished by the authorities and the beach will be given again back to the public... The water was clear though and the landscape nice.

This beach is great for families with children, and really for anyone!! The scenery is beautiful. The sea water is shallow for some distance out into the water. Beach chair rental is inexpensive at 4 euros per chair, or you can relax in chairs provided by one of the beachfront restaurants simply by purchasing food or drink from the establishment. Boat rentals are also available if you would like to take one out on an adventure. If you are looking for a laid back, not too-touristy beach, give this one a try!!

This scenic beach, known for its warm blue waters and pebbled sand, can only be reached on foot.

Despite the title for this review, it was the food of Sifnos that had our taste buds percolating. But to precede to the eating adventure ,proper sacrifice had to be laid in order to please the stomach and waist gods. To the point,a swim was the best option, given the walk down and back, the fantastic views and the gob-smacking clarity and colour of the inviting water was superlative.
Just possibly because,or despite its relative obscurity, few people who know Greece, have ever heard of Sifnos. Be that as it may, it is one of the most, remarkable of the Greek Islands.
In the first place,it was rich. Its long abandoned silver and gold mines had made the islanders the wealthiest in 6th century Greece. By the 1st century Sifnos pottery had become its most successful export, its heat-resistant qualities were particularly prized, hence the number of often eccentric home-made chimney pots you will see on the island as well as,ceramics incorporated into house walls.
I asked a taxi driver in Athens to take me to the Sifnos boat... his immediate reaction was,"ahh, you are going to meet the best cooks in Greece". he was right. There is a succession of of dishes like, pork cooked in wine, mushroom & herb rabbit stew, spicy vegetarian spaghettis, sloshing copper jugs of country wine and unforgetable breakfasts under the trees on the Kamres waterfront, with mouth-watering concoctions of yoghurt, fruit, nuts, and long, fresh fruit juice, eggs and crispy bacon, expresso coffee, what you will.
All enough to re-educate the next waiter on the next island who brings you rusks,luke-warm water,a sachet of instant coffee and some evaporated milk and calls it breakfast. Enjoy.
Ps. the museum, church at the summit and the township is a pleasant place to roam and indulge in the constant fantasy of...would'nt it be nice to summer here every year......hmmmmm.
