The 10 Best Things to do in Sheepshead Bay, New York (NY)

September 15, 2021 Rosalyn Ihle

It seems like most folks have a grandmother, great-uncle or some other distant relative that used to live in Brooklyn, or perhaps a friend that lives there now. In the early 1900s, it was a mecca for immigrants arriving via Ellis Island. A hundred years later, young professionals and artists left pricey Manhattan digs for Brooklyn's cheaper and more expansive space. Neighborhoods like Brooklyn Heights and Park Slope, which had fallen into disrepair over the years, were restored and reborn as funky enclaves. Walk or bike over the historic Brooklyn Bridge (or ride the subway) to Brooklyn Heights for a stroll along the Promenade and breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline. Meander through Prospect Park and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens for a taste of nature in the urban wilds. Catch a performance at the world-famous Brooklyn Academy of Music. From the delicious Italian restaurants of Bensonhurst to the Irish bars that line the avenues of Bay Ridge, from the hotdogs and rollercoasters of Coney Island to the bagels and handball courts of Greenpoint, Brooklyn is a state of mind as well as a dynamic community. Discover why, no matter where people move on to, they remain Brooklynites at heart.

Timeline Touring - Day Tours

Timeline Touring ventures past the routine and captures the ethnic flavor of NYC with our tours of Jewish New York. Created by a born and bred New Yorker, Timeline Touring explores the fascinating history of the Jewish presence in the Big Apple. Our neighborhood walking tours become eye opening experiences as little known tidbits of information are shared with tour participants and the story of generations of Jewish immigrants and their rich history and culture come to life. Our regularly scheduled walking tours include weekly tours of the Lower East Side and Borough Park, Brooklyn. We also offer private group tours to these, and other neighborhoods of Jewish interest such as Harlem, Wall Street, Ellis Island and more. Our tours are perfect for JCC groups, Temple groups, convention groups, family celebrations and reunions or for those interested in a trip down memory lane back to the old neighborhood.

Sheepshead Bay

Since I live there for more then 18 years, I can claim that a neighborhood is a great place for residence, homestays, strolling, fishing, shopping, or just walking those quiet streets and breathing fresh air. It's contrast to Manhattan. Marine Park and Salt Marsh are nearby.Coney Island and beaches are not so far (especially for drivers) However, the public transit is really an issue in the eastern part of neighborhood. Subway is a bit apart, and most of the buses are crowded. Yet walking afoot to the subway is a healthy alternative. Also there are three superstores with Russia food and a couple of oriental buffet, and much more of other ethnic food Mike Kosher, Halal, Pizza, etc.
