Savusavu is pure paradise. Originally established as a port for trade ships, the Fijian town is now a fast-developing tourist hotspot. Unsurprising, given its idyllic charm. Sink into hot springs for a rejuvenating soak or tour a private pearl farm that cultivates thousands of the multicolored treasures. SCUBA with world-renowned divers or splash in the spray of a majestic waterfall. Downtown, explore the vibrant wares of the local farmer’s market, where locals are happy to chat about Fiji’s foods and traditions.

We dove with Colin and Janine for two days and would do it again! KSD is a family biz which also includes their all action young son. No hammerhead sightings but plenty else that Savusavu dive waters offer added to extended chat, stories and laughs. Colin runs a terrific, large, tip top shape dive boat and does not skimp on the equipment with plenty new. Savusavu as a destination truly begs a visit as is a true Pacific small island escape but with all conveniences of home, as needed. Add in the short flight from the main island over the gorgeous Fiji waters and island landscapes as another MUST reason to get there... Be sure to fit in time down at the old marina in town (more like hamlet) for the island tuna version of fish and chips + a cold one + a chance to connect with some of the gregarious locals. I miss island life already :)!

Extraordinary service, offered by extremely seasoned professionals enabled our family to transcend from basically being beginners at the beginning of the week to being certified advanced open water divers by the week end. The general manager, Andy, the Dive Masters, Geoff and Jope (there are others) and the rest of the team (for us,Johnny and Nathan) did a wonderful job - day and night (yes, we did a night dive). We learned a lot, had a blast and are now hooked for life. An added bonus for us was spending high quality intimate time with such wonderful people, many of whom are cousins/brothers/etc. It is a great community and worth the long trip from everywhere.

Looking for an alternate tour for a day of the cruise ship, Rafa's Island attracted us with highly praised revues. I like swimming and snorkeling but my husband prefers exploring and relaxing. This day seemed to offer both, promising island walks to see fruit bats and a nutmeg tree as well as rock pools and walking around the island. Elayne met us from the ship as planned, she called for taxis to take us to Rafa's village where we were to be greeted and meet the chief. Crab racing and a coconut drink then out to the island; The group were dispatched in several taxis, the chief was nowhere to be found but eventually turned up and went through a ceremony [not as elaborate as some we have encountered]. Elayne then found some crabs to race on the sand - this was a non event as most people were drinking coconut juice. After a wait we were taken in 2 boats to the island. The group was about 20 people. Some had to balance on the boat side for the ride to the island. There was an oven already built from stones and leaves with some locals tending it. We were able to snorkel and swim from the very small beach which was rock & coral. Several party members hurt themselves on low hanging branches and others cut on the jagged beach. We did not see any first aid equipment and one man had a makeshift bandage torn from someones sarong. The lunch was fabulous. The fruit bats are indeed amazing. The island walk is through jungle and the path uneven which adds to the experience, care is needed but worth the short walk to see the bats. We did not see a nutmeg tree or have any commentary. There was a demonstration on making coconut cream which was then used for lunch; not sure how hygienic this was as several of us took a turn at squeezing the pulp. We could not walk around the island either on land or around the foreshore. There was a strong current which prevented me [not a strong swimmer] from going far off the beach, there were no rock pools. For my husband and others who were not swimming there was nowhere to sit and relax. The 'beach' was sharp rocks and coral but very short and narrow, there really was not sufficient space. We ate native style the lucky ones finding a log to balance on. Beware; there are no toilets in either the village or the island, Reef shoes are a must for the sharp rocks and coral. 9 members of the party decided to ask Elayne to take us back early. Maybe it would have been better at low tide?

Nakawaga Waterfall

Reviewed By Tony K - Los Angeles, California

They took us here from the Jean-Michele Cousteau Resort, and it was a great trip. Pretty drive up the mountain and then a nice walk with beautiful plants along the way. The falls are what you imagine on a tropical island, and it's fun to swim in the pools. There are two, and one is easier to access than the other, so most people will be able to get into the water. Even if you don't swim, you will enjoy viewing the falls.

Flora Tropica Gardens

Reviewed By TerryBoyd - Melbourne, Australia

An appointment is needed to visit this beautiful property. There is a Fiji $20 entrance fee per person. The garden is not large but is easily accessible via wooden walkway & steps up the side of the hill. Many tropical plant species are displayed , many but not all had name plates. We spent about 20 minutes doing the circuit. There was no guide available and the information on the plants was sparse.

Savusavu Farmers' Market

Reviewed By seafare74 - SF, California

We visited the market a few times during our one week stay and found that many stalls offered produce and fruit that did not appear to be fresh and almost all of the fish being sold was frozen for who knows how long and how many times. The same limited types of fruits and produce are offered at many stalls and usually at the same prices. No drinking coconuts to be found either. Perhaps it is the time of year but the market offerings were disappointing.

Waisali Rainforest Reserve

Reviewed By GlobalGypsy_13 - San Diego, California

This rainforest definitely lives up to its name. Thus, despite the well-graded paths, I'd strongly recommend being in shape for hiking and using local guides who are nimble but not necessarily talkative. Despite the signage that suggests abundant birds, our large group with a late morning arrival (both deterrents to birding) spotted a few birds at the entry where basic bathrooms are available. Actually more birds were seen on poles and wires on the ride up to the rainforest. On the positive side the lush flora features delicate orchids and colorful mushrooms.
