Saratov Regional Local Lore Museum

Starts at pre-history, moves through the Golden Horde, then Czarist times, the revolution, civil war and then a very frank and honest look at the 90s. There is enough here to keep you busy for at least three days. The staff are friendly (which is kind of unusual when it comes to museum staff in Russia). I just can't recommend it enough. It is not to be missed.

Spacemen Embankment

Reviewed By Elena K - Saratov, Russia

Saratov was founded in 1590, so it is over 500 years old.. If you happen to find yourself in Saratov the first place you should visit is the Museum of our Lore where you will see the whole history of "Sary Tau" (the name means yellow mountain in Turk) unfurl in front of your eyes. That is place number one which is a must. You will learn that a huge number of famous people were born, lived in Saratov or visited it: inventors, writers, poets, czars and prime ministers. But one Man will stay imprinted in the hearts of the whole world for many generations to come: it is the first astronaut: Yury Gagarin. He lived, studied in the college here and took his first flying lessons. When you go along the Spacemen Embankment you will see the stars and plaques with the names of the world famous inventors, writers, musicians, painters. The list is endless. And the Embankment is really worth strolling along.
Saratov was founded on the left bank of the Volga and then moved to the right bank which is more abrupt and ensured better protection. Its location on the Volga was very advantageous and facilitated its development. As there were rather many Germans exiled to our Region by Catherine II there were many catholic cathedrals in Saratov. Unfortunately in the Soviet times practically all the cathedrals and churches served other purposes, different from the one they were built for. One church was used as a Planetarium for instance. Luckily nowadays most of the churches and cathedrals are restored and used as such.
I guess the best way to travel is by ship from St.Petersburg as far as Astrakhan where the Volga flows into the Caspian Sea. You will be able to spend a day in Volgograd, Kazan, to name just a few. The ship also makes stops near Islands in the middle of the Volga where you can swim and lie in the sun.
That's the best way to enjoy the longest river in Europe.
