Oconee State Park

Reviewed By shay255 - Charleston, South Carolina

Great place for family fun. However, when we went the lake was low and under maintenance so no swimming was allowed. We did enjoy a game of putt putt and the playground equipment is great! We've been there in the Fall as well and the foliage is beautiful around the lake. Definitely a go to for us when we are visiting Mt. Rest!

Jocassee Lake Tours

Reviewed By beachbirder - South Carolina

Nestled in the absolutely beautiful western SC mountains is Lake Jocassee, part of Devils Lake State Park. A long ways from nowhere, but worth the scenic drive. The Lake tours are filled with information about the history of the lake, geology, flora and fauna of the lake area. You may even see a few waterfalls. Pontoon boats are used for the tours. They are comfortable and provide a nice group size to hear and learn about the area from very qualified nature "captains". Just note there is no bathroom on the boat, so be prepared. Several different kinds of tours are offered. I'm going on a moonlight tour next. Also note that they run tours a good part of the year, not just "tourist season".

Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel

Reviewed By onemichael - Greenville, South Carolina

Plan to see Issaqueena falls, The tunnels, and the Blue Ridge Railroad trail. Stumphouse was started in the 1800's(1856) along with 2 other tunnels nearby. The plan was to connect Charleston, SC with the Ohio Valley but they ran out of money( cancelled by State government). In the 90's Clemson used it to experiment with cheese aging. Now it is for visitors and bats. Always about 58 degrees inside. Bring flashlights. Hike the trail as well. Parking is $2. It is run by the City of Wahalla. Cheers!!! good for all family members. It is wet inside to some extend. Easy walk from parking lot. Opens at 10am

The Happy Berry

Reviewed By kenapastore - Hinsdale, Illinois

We enjoying stopping at The Happy Berry when we are at our home on Lake Keowee. We love to bring friends to pick blackberries (June), blueberries (June/July) and also buy corn and fresh laid eggs. It is a pick your own farm and they will direct you to the best areas to pick for the time that you are there. Each time our teenage daughter has a friend stay, we go berry picking. It is fun and can become very addictive. We have picked too much at times. In these cases we just freeze them, or, put them in pancakes, muffins on salads, etc. It can be hot in the sun so wear sunscreen and hats and be aware that bees do help to have higher yields, so just let them be;)

Whitewater Falls

A favorite spot for hikers and picnickers, this scenic area features the Whitewater River dropping more than 400 feet in a series of cascading falls.

Reviewed By D2958ZXgarym - King, United States

Nine miles south of Sapphire on NC 281 is Whitewater Falls. There is a $2 per vehicle fee for parking at the lot, and picnic tables and rest rooms are located here. The Whitewater River, while etching its way through the Jocassee Gorge, provides spectators with an awe-inspiring cascade. With a drop of 411 feet, Whitewater Falls is the tallest cascade in the southeast. An easy ¼-mile handicap-accessible trail leads to the first observation point; a set of steps goes to a lower viewing deck. These two observation areas provide the only views of the falls; there are no trails that lead any closer.

Keowee-Toxaway State Natural Area

Reviewed By Rose S

Visited the park on Labor Day weekend.
Nice hiking trail (2 actually)
1.3 mile trail was moderate difficulty, bug free no real God views. Some small trickle waterfalls. But a good hike.
Lake access for kayaks.
But the picnic area is across the highway, this area is just for picnics, pavilions and rest rooms. No lake access. Picnic sites are very close to Highway traffic.
Quiet and free entry to both sites

Oconee Station State Historic Site

Reviewed By Sharon C - Seneca, South Carolina

Considering the fact that the station was built in the 1790s, it is in remarkably good condition. Be aware that you can only go in the buildings on certain days at certain hours. Check the website or their Facebook page. The path from the parking lot to the buildings is wide and covered in bark so it would not be accessible to handicapped persons. Easy walk for us seniors who are mobile. No fee for parking or entry. The grassy area is well kept giving the knoll a pleasant historical feeling.

I'd never been in a kayak before and wasn't sure what to expect - especially since I"m middle aged, overweight, clumsy, and inflexible. The staff was friendly and helpful. Getting in and out was easier than I expected thanks to the good launch spot and the employee who held the kayak steady and gave me advice. Paddling part of pristine Lake Jocassee was great fun - so glad I didn't let minor physical challenges stop me. We'll be back!
