Lovely trip out to the end of the estuary & back (40 mins, €12 & 8). The company does a combined ticket to Crotoy, boat out & steam train back which we would've taken if we hadn't done the same trip by train a few days earlier. Would recommend this trip but shame the commentary was only in French. Would be nice if they had a written English version or a once weekly spoken one. C'est la vie

Have visited St Valery for a number of years. A pretty little fishing town with many restaurants and quaint shops with cobbled streets. Plenty of walks with fantastic views of the bay. In May, you can see the seals sunning themselves and swimming in the bay.
At certain times of the year, when the tide is out, you can walk across the bay to le Crotoy opposite, but only with the trained guides as I believe there is quicksand.

This is a great opportunity to experience a wonderfully preserved steam railway and see parts of the Somme that are largely inaccessible. The views aren't particularly wonderful, as the train wends slowly through the marais and very few settlements. But the lovely engines and carriages are like playing with your train set as a child. Beware that it's now quite expensive and it's the same cost no matter where you get on, single or return - so plan a full day and get the most from the experience.

This gem of a garden is set in the Rue Fleuries of the medieval high town of St Valery. You are welcomed and directed to the plan of the garden so you can wander around.Its an informal garden dedicated to plants that 'work', for flavour, food or medicine. There are quotes from literature on slates hanging in unexpected places.It's colourful, tranquil and a pure delight. The streets around are also tended by the gardeners of the Herbarium and are also very beautiful.

Sur la butte au-dessus des maisons, le bâtiment moderne et lumineux offre une belle vue de la baie depuis l'intérieur ou les "terrasses" et leur végétation de hautes herbes.
Les possibilités de passer un bon moment paraissent variées aux non experts que nous sommes, algues, pierres chaudes ou encore épices balinaises étant proposées en plus des hammam, sauna ou jacuzzi. Une équipe aux petits soins et en harmonie avec le lieu donne envie de revenir et nous commençons d'ailleurs à en faire un rituel de début de vacances.
Deux mots pour finir : au revoir.

Before going to this area, I had seen some TV report about the visits you could do on canoes to see the seals and the bay. I was thus determined to do that! Thus, on the day of our arrival, my husband and I went to the beach in saint valery and we looked at the different tours organised there (you've got some small beach sheds representing the different "companies"). One was open: it was the kayak ad va'a club "baie des phoques".
When I discovered the meeting time for the next day, I was a little less enthousiastic, suddenly: it was very early in the morning (in fact, it depends on the tides: you leave when the sea is retreiving and come back when it goes up again)! For a holiday weekend, it was hard! Thus, my husband had to push me.
The next morning, we arrived at 7:30. It was very cold.They equiped us with life jackets and cagoules to prevent us from freezing, explained the basic rules and off we went with a group of 10 people (of all age, all style) in the pirogue. Everybody was very nice (even if I suppose it is even better to do it with a group of friends).
The discovery began: the birds, the landscapes...It was great! And the guide, Sebastien, explained us everything very well.
Then, we arrived at the sandbanks where we stopped and from there, we saw a mascaret (sort of big wave) and the seals arrived! They were numerous and came closer and closer!
Then, we went back, followed by some young seals. It was really a good moment that I advice everyone to try.
Tips: you don't need to be too sporty to do the tour, even if, yes, you've got to row! But you will be proud of yourself after! Only the beginning is difficult!
You need good shoes (plastic boots are probably the best, as you have to walk / slide on mud to put the pirogue at sea) and warm clothes if it's windy. Take a spare pair of trousers for after.
The guides have cloakrooms to leave the things you don't want to bring and waterproof bags to put your phone or camera.

Our last day in St Valerie Sur Somme was without doubt the best! Matthew was a wonderful, calm and gentle guide. Very safety conscious and aware of the times of the tides so we had minimum effort to row out and back in again as we went with (rather than against) the tides. He was able to point out (from some distance) as soon as he spotted the seals. Because it was just three of us in the kayak, it felt like having our own private guide to the bay and in fact Matthew's knowledge of the wildlife was second to none. Would definitely recommend him over any of the larger kayak tour companies for a more personal experience. His English was excellent (quite a rarity in this part of France) and I think he is probably the best English speaking seal spotting guide (if not the only one) in the area. As it is his own company he really takes pride in what he does and clearly loves leading these trips. He never tires of this, as he told us himself, and that really shows in his enthusiasm and in his wonderful words of wisdom about the wildlife that flocks to the Baie de Somme.

Found this church by accident. It is at the top of a limited access road. It is dedicated to seamen. Although the church interior was shut when we visited the door was ope and a good view of the interior was possible. The design of the walls in flint and stone seemed to, me,to represent the chequerboard pattern of the old wooden warships. Superb views of the Baie de La Somme are also worth making the visit. It is situated on a popular walking route.
