Marche Vernaison

Reviewed By Sauna_Boss - London, United Kingdom

Worth visiting if you like antiques, even if you do not intend to buy anything. Larger than Portobello Road in London but (unlike that market) there is a clearer split between high priced top of the range antiques and lower priced vintage items. At the back of the Marche Vernaison is a cafe where a singer performs Edith Piaf songs.

Marche aux Puces de Saint-Ouen

This huge flea market, just north of the 18th Arrondissement, has been operating in some form since the Middle Ages.

Amazing experience. Some of the high end antiques from the 17th century (art, funiture, etc.) could have been in the Louvre and I would have had no idea. Rush past those cheap vendors on the outskirts - there are amazing high and lower end antiques. Prices felt high - but really neat things. Vendors were friendly and engaging (and dropped prices when asked.) Had a delightful lunch at some great cafe in the interior - the aisles go on forever. Was recommended this for a rainy Sunday by a high end local friend who previously worked in the corporate office of Chanel (great style) - we loved it. Highly recommend.

Porte de Clignancourt

Yes you do walk 10 minutes from the end of Line 4 to the actual market. Yes you do walk through street vendors who are agressive but I never felt threatened. This is my second visit and I am considering going back tomorrow since the majority of the market is only open on the weekend. You can pay to much just like any other flea market but you must bargain with the dealers it is part of the game. It is huge with many areas to explore all with independent dealers with items ranging all over the scope from antiques to junk but some of the junk is wonderfull. Mid afternoon it is fun to go into Chez Louisette restuarant in the back of the market. It is original and some would find the staff pushy but it was a great time listening to Cabaret music while you have a simple French meal with a glass of wine. I will make this a must stop during my Paris visit.
