Reserva Nacional Rio Los Cipreses

Reviewed By 2010-Urbi-et-Orbi - Santiago, Chile

Chilean national parks are varied in their accessibility, quality, and general service to visitors. The Río Cipreses reserve is surprisingly well appointed and managed by CONAF, the Chilean Forest Service equivalent. The road to get to the park is rudimentary so I would recommend a pickup (4x4 preferably) for the trip; also signs are not so clear and there are several possible ways to get there (a GPS is recommended too if you are a foreigner). One criticism I can mention is that the printed map you get at the entrance lacks detail so it is quite useless; take a picture with your phone of the map at the entrance instead and use that (I got lost several times inside the park for not thinking of this). I strongly recommend the "tricahue" trail, it is short and handicapped accessible. You arrive at the top of the cliff where you can see the rare colony of Tricahue parrots. They nest on the opposite side of the river on the cliff side. You should have binoculars or a powerful (300mm plus) telephoto lens to see them or photograph them there. Many parrots came to the nearby tress and I was able to take decent photos (see below). Another trail )Los Peumos) takes you to a beautiful waterfall (a 20 min hike up a hill) and a third, near the entrance to the park, to a nice lookout where you can see the valley. There are plenty of signs indicating the variety of plant life you can see. I recommend bringing along field guides for both plants and birds if you're interested in wildlife.
Do not go near the campsites as they can be noisy and crowded; fortunately, most people don't venture far from their tents.

We visited the stadium during the day and security allowed us to walk on the pitch and take photos. From here we came back on the night time and got tickets to watch the match (O Higgins) on Friday 15th Jan, 2016. It was brilliant, the crowd playing the jumps was great!!
A must see!!

Parque Safari

Imagine living in a cabin in the middle of a Safari, surrounded by nature and wild animals. Neighboring your stay are the majestic lions, close enough to look into their eyes and take you deep into the African Sahara. Just below are the marvelous giraffes, zebras and lamas at your fingertips. As the sunset approaches, you hear the roar of the lion and nature itself envelope you as you lay down to sleep. Feet away, the animal kingdom finds a place to rest, so close to you that you can hear the soft exhales of the tired animals after a long day. The cabins offer a kitchenette, a bathroom, 3 beds and a sofa bed. They are fully equipped for 5 people and also have 2 terraces with views facing the Lion Safari and Herbivorous Safari. You can enjoy a barbecue as well as direct access to all the attractions of the amazing Parque Safari.Parque Safari is located on the outskirts of the city of Rancagua, a city with many other tourist attractions, such as Cauquenes with its powerful healing waters, Lake Rapel, a place for water sports and natural beauty, and Chapa Verde Ski Center, a familiar place for winter sports. An easy access from the bus terminal of Rancagua, there are buses leaving every 10 minutes to Donihue which can take you to the Park in 15 minutes.

We came to stay overnight at the "cabanas" with friends and children.
The zoo is very small ( you better go to the Buin zoo for the selection of animals). Everybody has been very friendly but the place lack of things to do. You have to pay for nearly everything additional inside the park and there are very little options. In summary a 2 hours drive from Santiago for a 45 min walk around the zoo. The Cabanas also overlook a big area with Lions, however those are locked up in small cages at 19h00.

Parque Comunal Rancagua

Initial curbside appeal is pretty poor. I suspect that this extravagant park may have been created when the miners were settled here by Allende, decades ago. Keeping up infrastructure is tough and they have not... most of the picnic tables gone, some burned , lots of scruffy areas...like a lot of urban parks in Chile. A few good green areas. However, they are trying to improve it by planting some new shrubs, tidying up the lawns etc. We spent a few hours there (picnicing then going for an extended walk on the boulevard LB O'Higgins) while awaiting a night flight out from Santiago. Certainly the best park in town. Clean and tidy but very basic. No toilets but that's standard.
I wish them well with the reconstruction. Finding money and political will for maintaining is always tougher than building!
