Tubbataha Reef

Reviewed By DianneA271 - Brisbane, Australia

My husband and I had booked a live aboard dive trip to Tubbataha to go to sea aboard Expedition Fleet's M/V Oceanic lll Explorer on 26th March 2020. I'd been dealing directly with Janet and Lars Chua who run the fleet. I'd read many reviews for this wonderful location, travelling with Expedition Fleet and in nearly every one Janet's name appeared as a great person to deal with. For the months leading up to our sailing date there was so much helpful friendly advice and super prompt replies from Janet. Very sadly on 16th March we were told everything in the Philippines was shutting down due to Corona. Airports, and all other transport, hotels, restaurants and all dive stores were to close. All tourists including us were given 48 hours to leave or we could be stranded there for months. I reached out to Janet by e-mail asking her advice and she located a private charter to take us from Coron where we were to Clark airport. It was only because of Janet's help we managed to flee. The airport near Coron Town had already closed, with the exception of the few charter flights ferrying tourists north. Tubbataha was the star of our 5 week holiday which was cut down to 2 weeks with the panic to evacuate. I am so grateful to Janet for all her help and Pete and I are determined to get to Tubbataha as soon as the world's restrictions are lifted. Dianne.

This place is sooo much fun!! We stopped here on the way back from Underground River tour and I'm so happy we did. I tried everything, rockclimbing, zipline as well as zipbike. I loved all of them. The view from the top is priceless, the staff is nice, prices are quite reasonable. I wish I'd had more time there to zipline again. This activity was one of the highlights of my holiday in Palawan.

Nagtabon Beach

Reviewed By palawanismyhome - Palawan Island, Philippines

The first time i went to Nagtabon Beach was 25 years ago when the only way to get there was riding on the daily jeepney along a rough road which sometimes took up to 4 hours for the 30 km trip. Back then there were two simple places to stay and during our visits you could guarantee that there were no more than 10 people in the sea. Nowadays there is a concrete road leading all the way down to the beach and it is easy to rent a motorbike in Puerto Princesa for the 30-40 minute trip. The beach is sandy and the ocean clean as wave after wave hits the shore. There are many little canteens along the beach now and a few places to stay. You can even rent surfboards and enjoy the fun when the waves are big enough. Nowadays there are hundreds of visitors at the beach on the weekend, enjoying their time. BUT be careful as when it is rough there is a rip tide and people drown each year if the lifeguard cannot reach them on time. My favorite canteen/bar is Surf Surf which is to the left when you reach the beach, (about 100 m ). We used to be able to park our motorbikes on the access road but since last week you have to park them in a field for 30 pesos fee, which is very reasonable. Do not go to the first bar to the right which is run by a Slovenian who charges an astronomical 80 pesos for a beer, 150 pesos for a hammock, and even 250 pesos to sit at a table with two chairs to drink the beer that you bought. If you fancy a safer beach do not take the road down to Nagtabon beach, just continue another 9 kms to Talaudyaong Beach where swimming is safer as there is no rip-tide. Here there are several small resorts which charge a small entrance fee.

Firefly Watching

A romantic dinner at the floating restaurant and a magical tour with Firefly.

Reviewed By ukimehime - General Santos, Philippines

A must-see tour when you're in Puerto Princessa. The tour also includes (if your lucky) bio luminous planktons and star gazing. The firefly watching is a for-your-eyes only kind of tour since you can't take pictures. But what makes it truly enjoyable is that the more you make noise (while the small boat is cruising), the more lights they make... it's like Christmas trees being lit while you're passing by the mangroves. Also included in the tour package is a buffet dinner in a floating restaurant, serenaded by a lovely lady (a guest-jammer is also welcome).

Palawan Butterfly Ecological Garden and Tribal Village

The Palawan Butterfly Ecological Garden and Tribal Village is a place that reflects the mesmerising beauty of a province that is known as the "Last Frontier of the Philippines". It showcases a sheer variety or tropical butterflies from the Southern region of the country. These free flying butterflies are surrounded with live exhibits of scorpions, green-crested lizards, phasmid and mantises which are considered their natural predators. It is a window to the natural ecology of these colourful insects. Another added attraction are the rescued endemic wildlife of Palawan. These animals are given the chance of a second life by being rescued from poachers and wouldn't have survived in the wild because of the probability of suffering the same fate all over again. Like the Palawan Peacock Peasant and the Palawan Bearcat, these animals are now ambassadors of their own species in the wild. By educating the public about these wild yet gentle creatures the facility promotes public awareness about how our actions as human beings can affect greatly everything in our environment.

We went here after going to bakers hill, because it was close. 50 pesos entry and we had a short tour around the small enclosure, but it's such a lovely place! Amazingly they have local indigenous Palawan people, and they show some of their traditional crafts and musical instruments, and show some skills like making fire and shooting blow darts. This felt like an absolute gem of a place, and while the butterfly's were amazing, they also had bearcats, (a real thing!) Scorpions geckos, some different insects and snakes. If you're close, I recommend going, it won't take more than an hour and you'll be glad you went. I suggest you buy something or put some money in the tip box, it's so cheap and the money goes to support the indigenous communities.

I like it that they have bar where you can leave your things, grab drinks and food. They also have comfort rooms where you can shower still with salt water or change clothes, better than none at all.
