A full day of culture, history and fun. Couldn't decide which trip to book so we went with the mystery tour. Visited a couple small Yucitan towns, took a scooter taxi ride, climbed Mayan ruins, shopped at a fresh market, swam in a couple cenotes and had a fabulous Yucatan lunch at a hacienda. I'll be back. Rene is an encyclopedia of information on Mayan history, traditions, culture and food. Excellent guide.

Our family travels frequently and tries to incorporate an "educational aspect" into all our trips. This part--usually through local tours-- is barely tolerated by our youngest son (he's 11). He knows he has to do it, but it's just something to tolerate until he can get on to something more enjoyable.
Anticipating this, I always carefully read reviews and try to get the *best* tour available. When I was researching, it was clear after five minutes that Lawson's Original Yucatan Excursions is THE tour company in Merida. I was quite impressed actually, as *tour company reviews* are my gig as mom and chief travel coordinator. I know how to read them and I know how to read what they don't say... as well as what they do. I reached out to Lawson's and was impressed by their personal email responses. I also took note that Bill Lawson is very active on the Yucatan forums on TripAdvisor and the other social media platform I frequent. He's not trying to "sell" anything on either place--but his knowledge and passion for the Yucatan clearly stand out.
When Lawson's say they *customize* their tours, they mean it. Our tour was to Uxmal, but what our family really loves is to get off the beaten path. There are a lot of places we'd love to explore but would be hesitant because of language barriers or not knowing if we'd be welcome.
Ralf picked us up right on time and immediately started getting to know us, asking us questions, giving us ideas, getting a read on who we were and what we might enjoy. What I loved the most is he immediately started drawing our son into the conversation. He intuited that our kid was the *tough one to please* of our tour group and set out to give him a fabulous day. He was absolutely amazing with our son!
We did indeed get off the beaten path, stopping in several places along the way that we'd have never known about or dared to stop. So many adventures that day! We stopped in a market town (Huma, I think it was), and he took us all around the market. Ralf is at the market often and has many friends there. The affection for him is genuine--he has a great deal of respect for the vendors and took care to buy from all we spoke to. We got to try lots of different foods and I regret so much not buying all the spices I saw while we were there!
In the same town, we got to ride in a bicycle taxi. It's hard to describe, but this little town has hundreds if not thousands of bicycle and motorcycle taxis driving around. We've traveled in Mexico, mostly Pacific coast, and have never seen anything like it. Riding in one, with dozens around us, felt like something straight out of an Amazing Race episode. All negotiations were done in Spanish and Ralf handled it all. We didn't handle money or have to worry about money at any time during the day. Ralf is a pro!
We also stopped at an old Hacienda and visited a tiny family-run tortilla factory where we got to taste tortillas fresh off the grill. The family there was so nice. They had kids near my son's age and it was a great experience for him to have.
Uxmal was wonderful--as amazing as you've heard and can read about. It was worth every penny and there won't be many more years left when you can actually climb on the ruins. Do it now!
We finished the day with a visit to a beautiful little cenote on the way back to Merida. My son absolutely loved that and really enjoyed the panucho stop afterwards.
We rarely visit the same area twice, but our entire family agreed we'll all go back to Merida just to spend more time with Ralf and have more amazing adventures in the Yucatan. Job well done!

Went here believing from Lonely Planet that this was a nature reserve. In fact it is a small park with some animals and a few chenotes ( Freshwater swimming holes) of dubious cleanliness . One is carried over the creek from the entrance to the park. There is a limited system of paths between the swimming holes which takes about15 min to walk round. Ther re a few habituated recoons, coatis and pelicans. i.e. not wild . As the place is grossly overcrowded by humans it is hardly surprising that thwre are veryfew wild animals or birds to see. My count was 1 oriole!! It only costs pennies to get in though. No picnicking allowed. If you are a nature lover AVOID a complete wste of time. Even the observation tower was closed.

We were a group of 8, five adults and three children (ages 10, 13 and 16). We winter in Chicxulub, about 10 km from the Yucapalten Marina. We did a five hour trip and were looking for pan fish such as grouper and yellowtail. We were on the water by 9 AM. It was a beautiful day. Capt. John provided us breakfast burritos, water, and soda. First mate Chuck was always available to help. There were also some adult beverages. We headed out towards the ship channel north of the Progreso pier. An added treat was watching the freighters entering and exiting the port. Fish tend to gather near the edge of the dredged channel. The boat is about 30 feet long, and you are about 5 miles offshore (never out of sight of land). The waves were about 1-2 feet high, so there was some motion. If you are prone to motion sickness take your pill or use your patch. We caught about 40 fish. They provide all rods, reels, and bait. They help bait the hooks and take the fish off the hook. When we returned a man on shore filleted the fish. We brought a cooler and ice, and had several fish dinners with our catch. Everyone had a wonderful day. Capt. John also said that they often take out people from the cruise ship.

My friend and I took the 5 in 1 tour which includes the mangrove, cenotes, saltflats and flamingos, ending with a peaceful rest at the Tecnohotel beach club. Our tour guide Jesus was marvelous, his English was impeccable and he was very knowledgeable about each aspect of the tour. We had decided in the morning to go, walked into town to make the reservation and the air conditioned van picked us up at our condo promptly at 12:30. The tour was very interesting, and for the cost it was well worth it!! We took our swimsuits with us, you have the option of swimming in the cenotes and the pool/ocean at the beach club. You will need good footwear because there is a fair bit of walking involved. We decided to grab a snack at the beach hotel, the grilled shrimp and pasta were excellent and the service was great. All in all, this was a wonderful afternoon and I highly recommend dealing with Sergio's tours.

Jessica is a masterful teacher, encouraging, clear and supportive. She will work with you to advance your kiting skills starting at whatever level you find yourself. I've been to lots of different kiting spots over the years, Antigua, Michigan, Virginia, North Carolina, Hawaii. I have also had a number of instructors. I can safely say Jessica is the best instructor I have had and that KBY is one of the best places I have kited.
The town of Progreso is an easy walk if you have some down time. If you stay at the villa you will be right on the water in a beautiful setting.

La Ria Parador Turistico

Reviewed By sierradave1 - Progreso, Mexico

After driving by for 15 years, we finally visited La Ria with a group of other expats. What a great time! Our group of 12 went on the tour with three guides, one of whom paddled a two-person kayak with someone brand new to the sport.
The 2-hour tour is totally flat water on the lagoon that separates Progreso from the Mainland. Some is on the open water, but mostly you float thru "tunnels" cut thru the dense mangroves. Much of the tunnel time is traversed by grabbing branches to pull yourself along; it's a real adventure!
La Ria has a variety of different tours depending on the season; for example, sometimes they do a 5AM birdwatching trip. There also evening tours and occasionally full-moon night outings.
Our 8AM tour cost 200 pesos per person whether in a single or double kayak.
A La Ria trip could be a great addition to your Progreso visit!
