Friendship Oak

Over 500 years old, this oak tree is allegedly Mississippi's oldest and most beautiful tree.

Reviewed By mwalkerms - Olive Branch, Mississippi

I'm a fan of the beautiful southern live oaks that live throughout the coastal region of South Mississippi, so a visit to this historic tree was necessary stop. Located on the Gulf Coast campus of The University of Southern Mississippi, it is easily accessible and worth seeing. Friendship Oak keeps her majestic vigil on the Gulf of Mexico, a vigil that dates back to 1487. It has seen the history of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and of America unfold, while surviving the force of many storms... including Hurricane Katrina.

L & N Historic Train Depot

The beautiful Bay St. Louis train depot, built in 1928, houses the visitors center, where visitors can get information about businesses and attractions in the Bay St. Louis area, the Mardi Gras Museum, featuring beautiful Mardi Gras costumes and the Alice Moseley Folk Art and Antique Museum. The depot itself is set in a park like setting featuring many Live Oak trees, picnic tables, benches, and a walking path. Duck food can be purchased in the visitor center and many ducks and geese are waiting to be fed at the duck pond on the depot grounds. There is a lot to do and enjoy at the depot and to learn the history of this building and of the difficulties experienced in earlier times maintaining a railroad across the nearby Honey Island Swamp. The Alice Moseley Museum is an entertainment venue as much as it is a Museum and visitors to see Miss Alice usually leave the Museum with a smile on their face and a love of Alice Moseley in their hearts.

Others have mentioned the Carter Church Mardi Gras costumes on display and the Alice Mosley folk art upstairs. Seems like the reviews for this and the Alice Mosley Folk Art & Museum ought to be combined since they're in the same building. Be sure to look through the before and after Katrina pictures in the album kept downstairs. Nice staff in both museum areas.

I am not a vinaigrette type person...normally I wouldn't eat a salad unless it was topped with Ranch dressing. My world has been altered! This shop is soooo cool! That are many urns of oil with these really cool spickets. They have small cups for you to taste all the oils. Amazingly, I can tell you I am a changed woman! We bought fig vinergrette, lemon oil, dill oil, strawberry....soo sooo many to choose from. The small bottles are 6.00 each. You tell them the ones you want and they bottle it up for you. They have other things too. We bought some flavored salts but haven't used them yet.

I'm not a big fan of subdivision golf courses. But at The Oaks, they never really come into play. It's obvious they're spending some money on this course, because it's absolutely beautiful. The course is extremely spread out. I hate playing courses where the greens are 50 feet away from the next tee box. Not here. It's definitely a long course I do not want to walk. (of course, none of them are) Staff is very friendly and accommodating, as well as the club house. Can't wait to visit it again.

deal sea fishin in the Gulf of Mexico!!! WE CATCH FISH!!!

Reviewed By caribbeantravelcielo - New Orleans, Louisiana

We had booked a fishing charter with another local charter in Gulfport, MS, but on the morning of the charter, we were contacted by them to say they were having issues with the A/C on their boat. They then reached out to their friends with Fishing Frenzy and set us up on the same size boat to continue our fishing trip without interruption. We met Captain Barney and his crew at the Long Beach Harbor. It didn't take long and we were all set to leave for our trip. The day before, Captain Barney said it was a good fishing day with the charter catching quite a few large fish. We fished for 4 hours that day - we weren't as lucky as the charter the day before, but did catch a few to keep. Captain Barney even offered us to come back and try them again on another day/trip. The inside of the cabin was comfortable and a cool place to be to get out of the heat. We had an enjoyable time even though we didn't catch many, it was a great experience the crew were very nice and professional.

This is a great place that pays tribute not only to veterans, but local residence that lost their lives during Hurricanes Camille and Katrina.
The park is complete with a playground, walking path, exercise stations, gazebo, all with a view of the Gulf of Mexico and sea breeze. Saturday mornings the park is the location for a local farmers market.
I recommend this place as a relaxing location.

Katrina Archives

University of southern Mississippi, Long Beach, MS, campus. Library. Katrina Archives and special exhibits on the 3rd floor of library

Reviewed By gsanders59Louisiana - Louisiana

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast library (on the Long Beach campus, far building on the left) has archives of Hurricane Katrina on their third floor: currently on view are dozens of hurricane-untouched plates recovered from the school dining room and given to local elementary students for art projects of their choice, and a collection of tee-shirts autographed by some of the many volunteers who helped re-build. There is also a traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution, multi-media on American travelers (immigrants, pioneers, etc.) and, on the second floor, a room devoted to Gufl Park College (woman's junior college which once occupied this campus.) Free admission. And, there are public computers (with internet connection) available at the entrance.
Students are in evidence, so keep it quiet.

Cigars in The Pass

Reviewed By Stacy S - Biloxi, Mississippi

We aren't even cigar smoker's, BUT so glad we dropped in!!!
When we saw the sign for "craft beers", we were curious & decided to check this new place OUT!!! It's a cool cigar shop/ lounge that ALSO serves specially selected brews to compliment the smokes. With a walk-in humidor, as you would expect from any well stocked smoke shop, plus lots of comfy chairs to sit & enjoy your purchase. We bellied up to the bar after a friendly greeting from the owner Patricia...we're pleasantly surprised to see some of our Craft Beer favs!! Even on a mid-week afternoon, there was a steady stream of customers.

We can't wait to return for the Friday Special Events w/ music & " pop-up" cafe by a local Chef!!!
