Apollonia

Reviewed By John B - Toronto, Canada

If you're a fan of ancient Rome then the place to visit while in Albania is Apollonia, just outside of Fier. Perched atop a large hill with spectacular views all around, the excavated ruins only hint at what once was an incredible place. There are informative plaques at most of the sites though a good map is necessary to find your way around (take a photo of the large posted map when you arrive). The highlight was definitely the grand memorial area where the small theatre is located.
There is no charge to visit the site and there are two restaurants where you can get a drink or a bit to eat. However, getting here is a little unpleasant. While only a few kilometres from Fier, the roads are truly dreadful and you have to drive slowly and with extreme care to ensure you don;t damage your vehicle.

Dhermi Beach

Reviewed By Rich190_10 - Chester, United Kingdom

The beach along Dhermi is certainly worth a visit. Many bars spill out onto the beach with various amounts of sunbeds, sun four-posters and thatched shelters.
Quite Italian in its organisation but with a far more relaxed style. Some parts fo the beach are empty where you can take your own towel and parasol but all the supplied parasols and beds are very cheap and come with service at your lounger from the local bars.
Unlike may Beaches in the world, here you are never bothered by annoying sellers of rubbish ! There are some that walk along with fruit, nuts and some doughnut things but you are never pestered.
The beach on the Northern part of Dhermi is very long and straight from Ostro in the south to Summer dream in the North. We favoured the Ostro end.
The covering is mainly shingle and smooth small stones. the entrance to the sea can be a bit uncomfortable on the feet so some swim shoes are a help but, once in, the water is amazing ! Very clean and incredibly clear sea. It really is the most remarkably clear sea I have seen !
The area is still developing and will continue to improve in the coming years. Small bar area with some nightlife is quite cool with plenty of restaurants to experience.

Kalaja e Borshit

Reviewed By Nightride B - Germany, Bavaria

Karaburun-Sazan National Marine Park

Reviewed By Ton_NLD - NLD

We were staying in the Llogora pass and spend a day in Orikum where we visited the archaeological parc of Orik, the beach and the Karabarun marine parc. The latter we heard /read could be reached by boat. Seeing the boat operators are not so well marked yet in Oirkum we just went into a small harbour A bit north of the main beach area amd asked if someone could bring us to the peninsula where the parc was located. The owner of the bar at the harbor pointed us to a guy working on a rubber speedboat and said he could take us for €100 13500lek. We took the risk and went onboard with our 3yo daughter. It turned out to be worth while, although we could have picked a day with a less rough see, or a bigger boat. We though the ride on the waves was cool bit our daughter was less entertained.
The ride was beautiful and the parc/penisula was a beautiful area with nice views and secluded Beaches. We were dropped of at a beach restaurant with some small docks.
In the end I think we would have tried to get the price down. We ended up paying 12000 as we were only away for 2 hours (the captain waited for us) to come back from our short hike). We later read that there are tour operators in Oirkum that take groups to the parc for a lower price and probably in a bigger and more comfortable boat.
One can also walk following the beach road north, but you'll have to get by the guard at the marine base. We did that when we visited the ruins also in that area by asking inside the restaurant just in front of the base entrance (follow the sh95 until you reach the base entrance). In our case the guy who sold the entrance tickets was there and arranged for us to enter the military area.

Penisola Di Porto Palermo e Castello

The Porto Palermo is a striking part of the Albanian coast. Ali Pasha's castle is the best preserved (and the newest, I think) castle along "the Riviera." Cafe/restaurant across the road offers shaded parking and a shady veranda on which to have a cool drink after touring the castle. In the background, you can the remains of an old Soviet-era submarine base.
