The 10 Best Things to Do in North East, United States

November 9, 2017 Myesha Cogley

North East is a borough in Erie County, Pennsylvania, United States, 14 miles (23 km) northeast of Erie in the northernmost part of the state, and the county's northeastern corner. Fruit growing was an early economic endeavor, and is still to this day, as this is a popular area for especially cherries and grapes. There is an annual Cherry Festival in the summer and an annual Wine Country Harvest Festival in the fall. It contains one college, Mercyhurst North East. The population was 4,294 at the 2010 census, down from 4,601 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Erie Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the northernmost town in Pennsylvania. The name "North East" seems to be a misnomer since the borough is located in extreme northwestern Pennsylvania, but it is so named for its northeastern-most location within Erie County.

I am very new to wine making. I asked around family, friends and co-workers where I can go where someone can explain to me the process and help me in creating my very own wine! Pretty much everyone I talked to recommended your winery. Presque Isle came very highly recommended as far as experience, knowledge and friendliness. So I came to your winery on Monday, very excited and with very high hopes of gaining the vast knowledge of wine making that everyone said I would receive from your staff. I went to the tasting room and had a wonderful experience. Your staff was very happy, friendly, helpful and very professional. They recommended I go down to the Creekside location to get my wine making questions answered. When I went there, it was a completely different experience. The woman who was working, the tall blonde hair girl, gave me quite the attitude. It was as if I was interrupting her life to ask her some questions. When I asked the difference between young wine and juice, she was very rude and snarky. I felt very disrespected and I decided that I was not going to be treated that way and left. I was very disappointed as Presque Isle had come very highly recommended and at first I had a wonderful experience, however once I was waited on by her, my taste for your winery dissipated. She completely ruined my experience and I refuse to ever step foot in that winery again. I have many friends and co-workers who I will be telling about my experience with that woman there and encourage them to go elsewhere to purchase any wine or equipment. I felt very disrespected and no one in that type of business should ever treat their customers that way.

This is one of my wife's favorite wineries. We have purchased from them at many wine events. Our trip to their winery did not disappoint, we found a few more of their wines to enjoy along with seeing their nicely appointed building. The older gentleman that did our tasting was very pleasant and informative. Courtyard is definitely worth a stop if your on the wine trail.

The wine is very good. The Cab Franc is probably the best in the area. We stop here everytime we come to North East. I never forget the place that has a pet dog named after my favorite wine Cabernet. But they call the dog Cab.

All of the wines are delicious. We were up here in 2015, but didn't make it back in 2016 yet. Plan on trying to get here next time when we are in the area. Love the setup.

Beautiful old arch design wine cellar with a spectacular tasting area as well. The employees were all friendly and quite helpful.

Only bad part, while we found the wines to be ok, none were really special enough to us to make us purchase any.

This winery is one of our least favorites to visit. As the wine just isn't that great to us. We like the Bare Bones Red and Moscato which are dry Red and White wines. Other than that nothing here makes me jump out of my seat. The setting of where the wine is served is really nice. I recommend checking it out.

Lake Shore Railway Museum

Wonderful, donation run museum (recommended $5 per adult & $3 per child). The museum has railroad artifacts inside the beautiful 1899 train depot, but what sets it apart from other museums is the abundance of retired train engines and passenger cars. Really a hands on experience: you can walk through many of the rail cars, and watch the restoration efforts on others. The entire campus runs up next to three active train lines, with trains passing by often, especially after 2pm. Check the museum's website for the hours, they vary. We will definitely return every time we're close by North East.

The wines at this place are amazing. I am an avid wine taster, I even go to the Finger Lakes regularly and this is one my my all-time favorite wineries. I absolutely LOVE the wines here. Their fruit wines are very flavorful. I prefer sweet wines and I ended up taking two cases home last time I was here. I live on the other side of the state so when I visit my friends in Erie, I load up! They have a variety and this is the only place I've seen Almonderia, which is one of my ultimate faves. If you like amaretto, this is a must try wine.

Service is always super friendly and knowledgeable. It is pour-it-yourself place, which is convenient as you don't have to wait to try what you want.
