Mt Morgan Historical Museum

Reviewed By karos1 - Crowley Vale, Australia

We stopped here whilst visiting some mine sites in the area on business. They hold some wonderful photos of Mount Morgan in the gold rush days along with some very interesting articles. I am presuming it is manned by volunteers so I am thankful to them for keeping the historical mining industry alive. The only downside was when asking them for directions they only seemed to know the main tourist spots and couldn’t help. If you are wanting to know more about Mount Morgan they have a very interesting book on the area.

Mount Morgan Railway Museum

Mount Morgan Station was built in 1898 to serve the then booming gold mining township of Mount Morgan. Today it is a tourist information centre and museum displaying items of memorabilia, railway equipment, rolling stock and an exciting 3D audio visual presentation on the 'rack' rail system. Trolley ride days operate on Tuesdays and special occasions. A 'Silver Bullet' railmotor is also housed at the museum. Open 7 days, 9am to 4pm (closed public holidays). Mount Morgan Railway Museum is owned by Rockhampton Regional Council and operated by Mount Morgan Promotion and Development Inc. Rockhampton Region - gateway to Central Queensland. Eftpos not available.

What a lovely experience! Julian & Marianne provided such warm hospitality & shared their wealth of knowledge about this historic station & town. We were delighted to indulge in this rich history at this well maintained & beautifully presented site. Everything was clean, sanitised & orderly throughout which is a credit to the management & staff. We left satisfied with gained facts & figures about the rail & town & some beautiful photos. Thank you so very much.

Big Dam

Reviewed By 904chrissieb - Longreach, Australia

The dam is really low and in drought conditions but a little shower of rain before we arrived in Mt Morgan had greened up the surrounds. It's a lovely spot, shady, clean, lots of spots to sit, we took breakfast there a couple of mornings and walked our dog in peaceful settings around the dam. Lots of bike riders and people strolling around. When this dam is full it would be a spectacular place to visit. :-)

The Arthur Timms Lookout

Reviewed By karos1 - Crowley Vale, Australia

If you are wanting a view of Mount Morgan and to get an idea of scale then you have to stop at the lookout. Unfortunately the mine is no longer accessible to the public so the lookout is the only vantage point to admire the historical ruins of what were once the largest goldmine in the world.

Chill out at the No. 7 Dam (otherwise known as The Big Dam). With its picturesque natural views, the dam offers a tranquil place for a get together. Enjoy a picnic, use the free barbecues and let the kids run wild in the high shaded playground. The dam also provides some unique fishing opportunities with red claw and kayak fishing.
