Parque Natural do Alvao

Reviewed By John M - Raleigh, North Carolina

Portugal's "Natural Parks" are most like the national parks in the U.S. The Alvao to our mind is much nicer and more "natural" than Portugal's sole national park, the Peneda-Geres. The views here are incredible. At the main viewpoint of the huge and distant Fisgas de Ermelo Waterfalls, hiking on to the rocks for a view of the area may induce vertigo as the vistas are so huge and the dropoff so severe. Wow! Later we drove to a parking area near the falls and hiked down to the rapidly flowing river above the falls. My wife jumped into a relatively safe pool - freezing! It was a beautiful spot to sit and watch for a while.

Casa de Penedo, Fafe

Reviewed By JElliot32 - New South Wales, Australia

The Casa de Penedo (literally 'rock house') is quite extraordinary, a tiny but lived-in house built between large boulders, with the boulders forming part of the structure. It is located close to the top of a treeless hill in a particularly windswept and cold-looking spot, its nearest neighbours being a row of giant wind turbines. The house is privately owned and surrounded by barbed-wire fences, so you need to admire from a distance. The place is very elevated, so the views of the district are superb. Note that the house is also very difficult to find as there is just no signposting.

Castle of Arnoia

A Romanesque Castle overlooking the ancient land of Basto. It stands out from the landscape as a rocky fortress, with highlight to its keep, the square turret and the cistern. Below, the old town of Basto (currently known as village of Castelo) - with its pillory, audience house and apothecary (pharmacy) - reminds us of the period when this was a busy place due to the road that connected the Sousa to the Tâmega. This castle is part of the Route of the Romanesque.

Reviewed By JElliot32 - New South Wales, Australia

The castle dominates the tiny village of Castello and is an easy stroll from its main street. All uphill, but easy. It enjoys breathtaking 360-degree rural views, haze-free when we visited, and with the air as clean and crisp as you could like. The castle consists of a wall and a keep and had recently undergone some renovation, though what there is is still quite basic. I had been here a few years ago and it is much safer now. A bit off the tourist map - we had the place to ourselves. And it is free.
