Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village

The Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village is the only archaeological site in South Dakota open to the public. It is a 1,000 year-old village located on the shores of lovely Lake Mitchell. Each summer students from the University of Exeter, England and Augustana University, Sioux Falls continue the excavation of the site. Tours are given every day during the summer months by knowledgeable guides. Plenty of activities for all ages. Visit the museum, the dig site (located in the Archeodome) and Shoppe Antiquary (a gift shop featuring Native American jewelry, pottery, art and more). Our biggest event of the year is Archeology Awareness Days, held on July 2nd and 3rd, 2016. Open Monday thru Saturday 8:00am - 7:00 pm beginning Memorial Day weekend; open Sundays 10:00am to 6:00pm. Open the rest of the year 9:00am - 6:00pm.

We stumbled on this attraction purely by accident while visiting the corn palace. It’s so interesting to be able to see a real archeological dig and view exhibits that have been excavated from the site. It was far more interesting than the corn palace, lol. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

This was definitely an unexpected blessing. We are in Sioux Falls for 13 weeks and beginning to branch out and visit. We were headed to Corn Palace when I saw a sign for the walk thru Bible. This place was incredible and I could have spent hours just going through the the story line and Bible. The amount of work that has taken place as well as descriptions, you can't find anything like it. Not to mention the real artifacts that are above and beyond the displays. Water from the Dead Sea as well as sand, rocks from Judah, shells from the Mediterranean Sea, tons of things from the 12 Tribes and so much more. We spent so much time in the museum we didn't have much time to look around the gift shop as he already stayed an hour past closing for us! Definitely plan extra time as it's truly exciting and super kid friendly. There's a jungle play room just for the kids that I wish I could have played on myself! I absolutely enjoyed the conversation and enlightenment about the Bible. This is exactly what I've been looking for to help me with the struggles and questions I've had about the Bible. I'm extremely thankful and blessed. Who knew venturing from Lynchburg, VA to S.D. for a travel assignment would bring such blessings! Thank you Father, as I know it's not a coincidence! I'll be back soon!
