Slaughter Beach

Reviewed By Larry T - Milford, Delaware

I live approximately a 15-minute drive from Slaughter Beach. I love to come here and walk south along the beach along the Prime Hook National Wildlife Area. It is very relaxing to walk the beach and hear the waves lapping against the sand. I usually encounter very few other people when coming here. If you are a beach comber there are many interesting things to see. Most noticeable are the zillions of colorful, smooth pebbles. While not an abundance, there are shells to be found. I have also found pieces of sea glass. In the spring this is a horseshoe crab breeding area which attracts them in large numbers. This is the same time the redknot birds are migrating north and stop here to eat horseshoe crab eggs. Stop at the DuPont Nature Center (closed during winter) to learn more about this horseshoe crab/redknot relationship and other wildlife in the area. I have seen a few people surf fishing at the beach. Coming here is just a peaceful, relaxing experience quite different from the other Delaware beaches.

Abbott's Mill Nature Center

Abbott’s Mill Nature Center encompasses a picturesque pond surrounded by meadows, streams, woodlands, swamps, wetlands, a historic gristmill, and a modern education building. At the heart of Abbott’s is the 377-acre Milford Millponds Nature Preserve, where 5 miles of free trails wind their way through woodlands to meadows as wildflowers, birds, amphibians, reptiles, mammals, and insects flourish. Additionally, our 108-acre Marvel Saltmarsh Preserve, located in the Town of Slaughter Beach, is used for seasonal education programs and hosts a new pair of nesting Ospreys. Built in 1802, and on the National Register of Historic Places, Ainsworth Abbott’s Mill is a preserved, working gristmill run solely by a water turbine, and features both a stone & roller mill operation. Public tours of the Mill are offered every 3rd Saturday, March – November, from 2 – 3:30 pm. Educational programs for the public, schools, and scouts are offered year-round for all ages. Our Visitor Center is pet friendly and offers a variety of free exhibits including an aquatic touch tank. Abbott’s serves as a partnership between the Delaware Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs, the Division of Fish & Wildlife, and the Delaware Nature Society, a state-wide, 6,000 member, non-profit organization whose mission is to improve our environment by connecting people to the natural world through education, advocacy, and conservation. DNS members receive reduced pricing for programs, free canoe rentals on Abbott’s Pond, and discounts at local retail affiliates. We are located just 4 miles from downtown Milford, DE, at 15411 Abbotts Pond Road, off Rt. 36. The Visitor Center is open year round Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, and during April – November on Saturday & Sunday as well, from 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Trails are open for hiking, biking, and dog walking every day from dawn to dusk, including a 5K cross-country trail adjoined to Blair’s Pond.

We pulled into the center and one of the staff immediately told us where the best hiking and biking trails were. We ended up having time to do the trails around the mill and out into some of the woods. They were well marked and maintained. It was a lovely visit and the staff is extremely helpful! The interactive area was cool for my son. He got to "pet" a live turtle and I especially liked the trail on the little board walk! Very beautiful with all the fall colors.

Delaware Turf Sports Complex

I love what this facility brings to central DE. Excellent complex that can host a wide variety of sporting events, including multi-day tournaments. High quality fields and overall design, with concessions, ample parking, etc. Road construction is still catching up to the facility, but will ultimately provide for proper entry and exit. Currently if approaching from the North you will need to pass the facility and come back up to it, after turning around at the next overpass.

DuPont nature center

Reviewed By wcorkern - Lusby, Maryland

The DuPont nature center is That’s one of the best places to see migrating shore birds in the spring, when they stop over on the Delaware Bay to fatten up on horseshoe crab eggs on their way to nesting grounds farther north. We were there the first week in May, 2016. The horseshoe crabs hadn’t really hit the beaches big time yet, but the birds were arriving apace. Birds we saw on May 4 & 5: Red knot (2), dunlin (numerous), sanderling (numerous), oyster catcher (2), black-necked stilt (2), ruddy turnstone (numerous), willet (several), dowitcher (several), common tern (1), snowy egret (several), bald eagle (3), double-crested cormorant (numerous), laughing gull (numerous), herring gull (numerous), black-backed gull (numerous), yellowlegs several. And we’re not even real “birders.”
The staff was friendly and full of news and tips on how to see the greatest variety of birds.
A tip: if you're visiting at high tide during a northeast wind, you may not be able to get there because the Bay rises and covers the road at times.

Y Chromosome Massage

Men have different needs than women do. Men want to be touched differently. We have totally different values. We're uncomfortable walking into a spa where women are having their toenails painted to ask about massage services. We want a space where we feel comfortable, not one where we are the "outsiders." I've built my business around taking care of men. I enjoy working on men and they seem to enjoy the straight-forward approach I have to massage. No vanilla candles here. No perky receptionist asking if you want to add on a facial or foot scrub today. Just me asking you where it hurts, what is tight or stiff, what are your goals for this session? Then you get on the table and I make it all better.

I'm so glad I could help and make your vacation enjoyable again. Come back next time you're in town.
