Vance Birthplace

This pioneer farmstead, tucked in the Reems Creek Valley, features the birthplace of Zebulon Baird Vance, Civil War Governor of NC. The five-room log house and its outbuildings are furnished to evoke the period from 1795 to 1840. Vance's military and political career as Civil War officer, North Carolina governor, and U.S. Senator is traced at the homestead. Also included is the history of Vance's famous mountain family.

When we arrived we were told there were four school groups taking tours and all of the tour guides were busy with them. They also would not let us hook up with a school group to get inside the house and a tour guide would not be available until 2pm. I was able to take 2 pictures through the window though after one school group left.

The property offers the Vance homestead, the original 1790s slave cabin, and five outbuildings in a beautiful valley setting. There is no fee to take the tour. I always find it sad to look at the slave cabins and take some time to reflect. The visitors center has a nice small museum inside.

The Farmer's Hands

Sebastiaan and Ariel Zijp met through their love of old-time music festivals, cooking, farming and adventures. They fell in love and bought a 150 year old farm house on 2 acres in the mountains of Madison County, North Carolina. They tilled up their lawn, built garden beds, planted flowers, herbs, fruit trees and vegetables and started raising chickens, ducks, rabbits and honeybees. They pride themselves on following sustainable and organic practices and living and learning from the land. Through this growing interest in the simple life, they formed The Farmer's Hands Homestead. Sebastiaan’s passion is food. He grew up in his parents kitchen, helping cook and keeping them entertained with stories, tales, and jokes. As he grew older he was able to help cook more and entertain while in the kitchen. Sebastiaan makes his home kitchen feel like his parents kitchen; full of warmth, laughter, love, and of course, food.

Sandy Bottom Trail Rides

My husband and I went on a 3 hour ride with this establishment and they were wonderful! Horses were beautiful, fat and happy, all the equipment was very nice. I particularly liked the fact that each rider gets their own saddle bag that fits nicely around the horn of the saddle. Holds water bottle, camera, cell phone, food and MORE! Loved this nice feature. We rode to the Garnet Mine. Took some time to test our luck at finding garnets and the best part was huge mine that you could walk into. We saw deer and they have cattle and goats to keep you company. The owners were so nice, they only seemed to be interested in us having a great time.
Very nice clean bathroom on premises too. Great for all ages.

Actors are fabulous, some have come back to the area for the summer season for years, and we look forward to seeing them each season. And new faces appear often from the local college theatre program-and they're great. It's a small intimate space-no bad seats. One new commissioned play is performed each season, and the other performances are a mixture of musicals and old favorites. Excellent directors and support staff.

Can swim in shallow water below the falls. Good to check with park rangers on water safety/toxicity for different rainy conditions.
Above u walk around the lake which has ducks. DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED around the lake.
