Shugarman's Little Chocolate Shop

Reviewed By Dan P - Santa Fe, New Mexico

If you like chocolate, GOOD chocolate, no GREAT chocolate, no the BEST fricking chocolate you've ever FANTASIZED about, you MUST visit Shugarman's Little Chocolate Shop in beautiful downtown Madrid (pronounced by those in the know "MADrid"), New Mexico. You no sooner set foot inside the door but you're asked if you like milk, dark or white. Harvey or Nan will begin handing you samples of what he's been making with an explanation of what exotic ingredients have been creatively and thoughtfully combined in it, the cocoa content, etc. Harvey Shugarman owned, and was chef, at his own five star restaurant in Baltimore for something like 20 years so the guy knows what he's doing. His fun loving, maybe a little eccentric, personality adds to your experience and both are among the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. Oh, and once you've realized too late that you wish you'd bought more, they do ship. The selection changes daily so you've got to call to find out what's available.

Madrid Old Coal Town Museum

The Madrid Old Coal Town Museum is a ongoing preservation project saving it from its industrial and ghost town past. Most often we provide a brief tour by a local tour guide. After that you can walk around on your own through a few barn buildings and outside places. The exhibition is pretty much a collection of historical artifacts that have not been cleaned up or restored and have minimal descriptions. A video explains about the Christmas light tradition in the old days. The highlight of the museum is the Engine 769, with it's nose almost inside the Engine House Theatre. Please visit & support our effort to preserve a piece of history.

Traveling from Albuquerque to Santa Fe and points North, happened to pass though this old coal town. They used to mine coal for the railroad here. This place seemed to be popular with a number or restaurants and bars.

It appears to be a fun place. It is not on the Interstate.

Turquoise Trail Sculpture Garden

We open seasonally: Memorial Day to Labor Day - Monday to Friday 10am - 5pm. Gate closes at 4:45pm. Origami means “folding paper” in Japanese. Origami in the Garden tells the story of this art form through a collection of over 20 monumental outdoor sculptures. It is currently exhibiting at the Turquoise Trail Sculpture Garden, just 10 miles south of Santa Fe. Each sculpture is inspired by a blank piece of paper that has been transformed into museum quality metal and tells the story of creativity and the art of making something out of nothing. The collection was created by Santa Fe artists Jennifer and Kevin Box. The exhibit includes collaborative works with origami masters Te Jui Fu, Beth Johnson, Michael G. LaFosse and Robert J. Lang. The Turquoise Trail Sculpture Garden is a private residence nestled in the Little Garden of the Gods on Highway 14, a National Scenic Byway. With towering rock formations encompassing the three acre sculpture garden, visitors meander through a distinct southwest landscape discovering sculpture along the way. The environment creates a dramatic backdrop for this exhibition of stark contrast and unexpected harmony. The relationship between the white clouds and the predominately white artwork evokes a sense of lightness and peace.

Kevin and Jennifer Box have created a beautiful, otherworldly experience in the high desert of the Turquoise Trail (close to Santa Fe). It is remarkable how a delicate art form like origami can be transformed into such substantial metal sculptures. Cranes, horses, even buffalo come to life in this vivid setting. Add to your must see itinerary.

I'd always heard about the burgers at the Mineshaft but I don't eat beef, Joe directed me to the 'Make Your Own Burger' section of the menu,...MoreWe're so glad that you enjoyed the Veggie Burger, we try to make sure that we have something for everyone to eat and drink ;-) The MadChile Margarita includes muddled cucumber and jalapeno, so its not too spicy hot.

The trails were scenic. For the most part the trails were narrow. We went by several old mines. It would have been helpful if there was more signage or blazes for the trails. When we first arrived, there was a ranger-led walk that the people seemed to be really enjoying. We chatted with the friendly ranger for a few minutes. The hike was very doable with just a fairly short ascension. Sunscreen and water recommended.

Casa Grande Trading Post & Petting Zoo

Todd & Patricia Brown are owners of the Casa Grande Trading Post, Mining Museum and Petting Zoo. They live in a 19-room adobe hacienda that they built themselves. They make jewelry from rare Cerrillos Turquoise and Variscite from their two mining claims. The turquoise is brilliant green, while Cerrillos Variscite is white. They cut and polish the stones and set them in silver. Todd uses techniques developed when he first came to Cerrillos in 1970. Their son Andy follows his dad's footsteps, working with him at the mines. He is also as an artisan who does custom jewelry & repairs. Visit the Mining Museum, admission $2. A sprawling display on local history, prehistoric mining and territorial mines of the 1880's. Items include antique bottles, mine photos, tools, minerals and the unique finds of an 1880's Cerrillos outhouse dig. The Petting Zoo is a barn yard of several friendly goats, llama, chickens and pigeons. Animal food is for sale in the gift shop. Children enjoy the live entertainment and a stop will add to your adventures on The Turquoise Trail.

So, there's not much in Cerrillos. Down one of the roads is the Casa Grande Trading Post. The outside is strewn with all sorts of old equipment. Mostly just stuff. Going inside, there are selves, trays, tables everywhere filled with more stuff - lots of rocks, some trinkets and books, some 'things'. It's all fun. And what it is. It isn't all 'authentic'. But it's fun to look at. There's a little museum ($2). Didn't go in. Looking in, it had a bunch more stuff. Probably worth the admission.

And the reviewers are right, the petting zoo is pretty pathetic. But again, it's what it is, a tourist place. And you might find something interesting to buy.

Cerrillos Station

Cerrillos Station features local NM jewelry and artwork, hand made gifts, antiques, and a Farmers Market every Thursday afternoon. Special events are held on the first Saturday of every month showcasing live music, new artwork in our South Gallery, and dining options from a visiting guest Santa Fe restaurant. We also house a movement studio offering weekly classes for all ages in Ballet/Barre, Yoga, Nia Dance, Pilates, Tai Chi, Guided Meditation, and American Sign Language. New classes are always forming. The finishing touches are being placed on a full service hair salon and tranquil massage room, opening soon! Located in the heart of the historic mining town of Cerrillos along the scenic Turquoise Trail, Cerrillos Station is adjacent to the railroad. This once sleepy town is experiencing a revitalization and now hosts several working artists' studios, a mining museum and petting zoo, a cafe, the Cerrillos Hills State Park, horseback riding, bike rentals, and Cerrillos Station which opened in April of 2016 following a lengthy renovation to the stone building which was previously home to two separate saloons, a general store, and an antique shop over the course of its 100+ year lifespan. The original charm and character remains as Cerrillos continues to inspire painters, photographers, and movie makers alike. Several old western movie sets are located nearby and the scenery of Cerrillos never ceases to enchant both visitors and motion picture audiences world wide!

Nicely restored General Store offering not the traditional general store tack, but one of arts and crafts, drinks and snacks, reminders of days gone by for us history buffs.

I especially, enjoyed the wall displaying the legacy of Cerrillos. Another "Guy Favorite" of mine was the reconditioned and polished railroad ties, re-shaped into handy-dandy knives. What a fabulous way of putting such a historical piece of the Westward connector to good use.

The Town and Station are off NM-14, so watch for the turnoff. I found their "Main Street" more pleasant to walk than say Madrid's where NM-14 is passing over your toes.
