Von Stiehl Winery

Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery… founded in 1967! The Schmiling brothers that grew up in von Stiehl Winery now own and operate it. The older brother, Aric, utilizes the most modern equipment known to winemaking as he artfully crafts fine wines. The younger brother, Brad, likes romance and history and manages the business. The Civil War-era building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, features a tasting room, a 10,000 square foot production facility, three Civil war era underground limestone tunnels and a spacious outdoor terrace with Lake Michigan views. Von Stiehl’s 30+ grape and fruit wine recipes use top quality ingredients from local fruit (Door County cherries), as well as West Coast-grown grapes (Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon).

In the middle of fields, there is this wonderful church. It has outdoor gardens for praying the stations of the cross and rosary. There is adoration on Wednesdays. On the basement, there is a chapel marking the spot where sister Adele saw Mary. Take time to read the amazing story. Only Marian apparition approved by the Catholic church in 2010 in the US.

I drive a tour bus. Today we had about an extra hour and called Parallel 44 to see if they could accommodate us on short notice. The owner was very kind but very firm about not accepting bus groups because he is not equipped to handle large groups. We appreciated his candor-he saved us from wasting tour time and then finding out we could not have stopped. We may be able to visit in smaller groups at a later date.

Bay Shore Park

Reviewed By Mindy and Roger A - Janesville, Wisconsin

We visited this Brown County Park for the 1st time. The park is just off Hwy. 57 along the Bluff adjacent to Green Bay. This park provides a laundry list of facilities including, camping hook-ups, boat launch with extensive parking, excellent trail system, playground, bathrooms, park shelter, picnic tables, softball field & volleyball area.

The park area was well maintained. All facilities were in good condition. We traversed the entire trail system which was probably about 4 miles total. The trails were in good condition. The bluff portion of the trail is flat and provides several overlooks of Green Bay. Portions of the trail qualify as "Moderate" in difficulty where you go from the bluff to the shoreline. We saw a variety of wildflowers and rocky outcrops which added to the quality of the hike.

This is one of the best County Parks we have visited. The location is close to Hwy. 57 with signs directing you to the park. The extensive facilities provide lots of options.

Hillside Apples

You can either pick your own apples or buy ones already picked. Good apples at a reasonable price, plus cider. They also had pumpkins for Halloween, great selection of those. Will pull a cart of people to the orchard in a tractor, seems fun for the kids. They also had some cool horses, Clydesdales I think, when I visited. Nice stop on a nice day, plus I love apple farms.

Bearcat's Fish House

We stopped by to check it out after a local suggested it as the best fish house on the peninsula. We were pleasantly surprised by the volume of options! Not cheap, but good fish isn't cheap. We were also very pleasantly surprised when we were offered a small bag of ice for FREE to be able to transport our fish home in the motorcycle without losing refrigeration. Very nice and they were obviously prepared to do that, a pile of small bags of ice in the freezer for free to grab on your way out the door.

Now to the fish, some of the best quality, not overly smoky smoked salmon I have ever had! $11.99 a lb and worth every cent! Fast and very friendly service too. We will be back!

Kewaunee County Jail Musuem

The jail museum is housed in (no surprise) the county's former jail which also served as a home for the jailer's family. The museum provides a wonderful collection of historical memorabilia. The former jail cells include an eclectic mix of items and rooms upstairs feature, among others, Native American artifacts and items from area churches. There is a small admission fee which is well worth it, considering how much time can be spent perusing things. The museum is located next to the Court House and is hard to miss since it sits high on a hill overlooking the city. Hours may be limited since the museum is staffed by volunteers.

Ahnapee Brewery

Ahnapee Brewery played an integral part of beer-making history in the state of Wisconsin dating as far back as 1868. A new chapter in the brewery’s history began in summer of 2013. Fueled by the dreams of Head Brewer, Nick Calaway. Join us for favorites like Little Soldier or Two Stall and for special release brews from the Hobo series and other limited release craft brews. We enjoyed a nice stop during our motorcycle ride at the Ahnapee Brewery. They didn't open until 12 pm so we killed some time to get there, enjoyed the little tavern across the channel from it until they opened. Nice choice of beer, the milk stout was delicious! Very reasonably priced for very good beer. Nice outside seating in front and out back along the hill above the channel, fun to watch the boats go by. We will stop here again next time through!

Little ones, say under 6, will really find it incredible, while those up to 10 still have a blast, and the "big kids" will like the newer attractions like the Z.P....
