This is a small, local operation. When you go, don't expect fancy, just go for the fun that you will have with others. It's not the biggest or the best, but it's clean, great staff, and cute atmosphere.

This park is perfectly shaded with multiple seating areas for parents that are in the shade - what a concept, right? There's ducks and a pond that is very nice and entertaining. The neighborhood it sits in is safe and quiet. There's also a huge covered pavilion. I really love this park!

My wife and I canoed Section 2 of Village Creek. This is the shortest of the four sections Eastex offers. My wife is not very comfortable on the water and quite afraid of a number of wild critters. We both enjoyed the trip thoroughly. The creek was calm with many sand bars on this section -- some with a little shade, which we took advantage of to enjoy the lunch we packed. Since we went during the week, we had the creek to ourselves. We heard thunder in the distance from afternoon scattered storms, but we didn't get rained on. All-in-all, a great time.

Fire Museum of Texas

The Fire Museum of Texas is housed in the historic 1927 Central Fire Station for the City of Beaumont. View interactive exhibits for the entire family that trace the history of the fire service in the state of Texas. Our exhibits explore equipment, trucks and fire fighting methods from the mid-1800s to the present. Perhaps one of the most comprehensive fire museums in the nation our exhibits feature a 1856 Howle Hand Drawn Tub Pumper, a 1909 Ladder Truck and a 1931 REO Light Truck - the first of its kind in the entire world. An interactive Fire Safety House allows children to practice escaping from a house fire.

I didn't go to the museum. I just came for the Roadside America Dalmatian fire hydrant attraction! Most definitely worth the stop! So much so that when we came through for our Florida trip we stopped again to bring my eight year old niece. She loved it. So did the teens in the car who didn't want to stop.

This private nature preserve has walking trails that exhibit a wide variety of species thriving in the arid sandy soil ("sandylands") In May, we saw lots of small blooming plants, Long-leaf pines (rare these days), birds and butterflies.
There is no fee charged to enter this Texas Nature Conservancy nor is a reservation needed to enjoy the trail(s) during daylight hours. I believe guided walks can be arranged through their local office (call). We highly recommend joining the Nature Conservancy Membership for nature lovers or anyone interested in saving these last few great places on Earth.

John Jay French House Museum

The John Jay French home is the oldest house in Beaumont that has been restored to its original state. Built in 1845, the home has the distinction of being one of the first two-story homes, one of the first made with milled lumber, and one of the first painted homes in the area. The John Jay French Museum demonstrates the life of a prosperous Texas pioneer family from 1845-1865. The historic pioneer settlement, built by John Jay French, tanner and merchant, is replete with antique furnishings, clothing, and pioneer household utensils. Outbuildings on the grounds include a blacksmith shop, tannery, privy, and smokehouse.
