We chose Stephan Bedford’s winery over the packed crowds at Los Olivos, and sipped Stephan’s splendidly balanced complex wines - generous pours, no fee — to the sounds of classic jazz. The 2012 Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cab Franc are exemplary. And Stephan shared the details of how he manages the vineyard, how the drought affects the vines, and other lore of the Central Coast, such as stargazing spots and wildflower seasons. Time well spent with a fascinating host.

Martian Ranch and Vineyard

If I could give Martian more than 5 stars I would! I was tasked by my daughter to plan a pre-wedding winetasting event on the Friday before her Saturday wedding in Los Alamos, CA. We needed a venue that would be easy for people driving up from LA to get to but that would also showcase the rural beauty of the Santa Ynez Valley countryside to a bunch of millennial urbanites. The friendly folks at the Los Alamos Community Center suggested Maritan (among a few other places), which we never would have found on our own, and it was ideal for our event. First, it is situated in Alisos Canyon which conveniently has an exit right off the 101 Freeway with the tasting room is located just far enough up the road – past vineyards, vegetable fields, cows and horses - to be truly “in country.” Next, the tasting room and outdoor area were perfect for our group – small enough to be intimate but large enough to easily accommodate 100+ guests. Third, the staff is amazing. Thank you Amanda, Felicia, Oscar and Sheila for everything, - especially the unexpected special touches of closing the property to the public and printing up special cards detailing our wine selections. Fourth, the wine is delicious and reasonably priced. What more could anyone possibly ask for? I cannot recommend highly enough that Martian be on your “must do” list for places to visit in the Santa Ynez Valley. I also recommend that you join their wine club that will provide you with great wines at a discount every 3 months as well as free fun “abduction” parties. They even hold periodic stargazing outings helmed by an astronomy professor from UCLA. Check them out on line then go and enjoy!

Casa Dumetz Wines

We stopped in this wonderful place several years ago, late one Summer afternoon, on the way home from a vacation to visit family in Eureka. We had gotten dinner (well, late lunch, really: great sandwiches!) at the Collins Market, and a little wine to finish it off seemed like a nice idea. We walked in, and were greeted very warmly, and after a flight with some excellent commentary, we decided to join their Club. And we've been happy to continue being Club Members, as the wines just keep getting better, the service never stops being the best, and Sonja! When the owner/winemaker also is one of the servers, how can you go wrong? She infuses the place with energy, but is never over the top. She remembers her regulars, and makes us feel like part of a family. Yeah, that's trite, but it is also true at Casa Dumetz. Everyone else just seems to feed off her vibrancy and friendliness. There is a craft beer place next door with a doorway between, and a picnic area outside. There is a small menu of some truly marvelous food: the tacos are great! So, if beer or cider is more your thing, you'll do just fine. We always enjoy ourselves here, possibly more than any of our other wine clubs.
