The 10 Best Things to Do in Leningrad Oblast, Russia

November 9, 2017 Stefan Strunk

Leningrad Oblast (Russian: Ленингра́дская о́бласть, tr. Leningradskaya oblast’, IPA: [lʲɪnʲɪnˈgratskəjə ˈobləsʲtʲ]) is a federal subject of Russia (an oblast). It was established on August 1, 1927, although it was not until 1946 that the oblast's borders had been mostly settled in their present position. The oblast was named after the city of Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). Unlike the city, the oblast retains the name of Leningrad.

Tikhvin Assumption Monastery

Really good place to visit with the family. Learn some history, try some traditional russian food and visit one of the Russian holiest sites with the Theotokos of Tikhvin icon. You can visit the museums of where the royal family members stayed when they visited the Monastery. Visit the tower of bells with the most wonderful view of the small Tabori lake. Also you can purchase traditional Russian Orthodox jewelry and enjoy some fresh made bakery that is just to die for. It is free to visit the site, but you will have to pay a small fee to buy the visitor tickets for the museums and the bell tower.

Gatchina Palace

Definitely one of the top 5 places to see in and around Saint Pete. During the tour it was shocking to see only Russian language groups, as it seems that travel agencies and foreign tourists simply ignore this palace. Yes, it is the last in line for restauration funds (relative to Pushkin, Petrodvorets, Pavlovsk and Hermitage) and remains work in progress, but this is the only former czar palace which is rather a castle and indeed resembles a smaller version of Versailles.
Great guides, interesting history, real feeling of the restauration works and the unique underground cellar experience. Treat yourself!

Located at the head of the Neva, Shlisselburg is a short day trip from St. Petersburg. What a find!! Rich in history and situated in a stunning location. Oreshek fortress held out against the Nazis for nearly 500 days during the Siege of Leningrad & ruins of the prison chapel are a memorial to this feat. The Tsar's Tower, the oldest surviving section of the fortress is quite imposing. A fact of which I was unaware prior to my visit: Lenin's brother, Alexander Ulyanov, was hanged here for treason in 1887 at the New Prison (1884). A plaque shows the site of his execution. Highly recommend a visit to this fascinating fortress!

You can walk here for a day and enjoy the nature. It's explored easily by wearing normal sneakers. I even saw there women wearing high heels which is doable but not comfortable and there are a lot of stones and corners where you can climb onto but they couldn't.
We came here just for 1,5 hours in the evening.
It was a nice atmosphere, we could sit down here and there on rocks and enjoy the view. We regret that we didn't take a bottle of hot tea. That would've made it a perfect little evening walk.
