The 10 Best Things to Do in Lehighton, United States

February 17, 2018 Alida England

Lehighton (/li'hɑitən/) is a borough in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, United States, 77 miles (124 km) north of Philadelphia, and 54 miles (87 km) south of Scranton. In the past, it developed early industries because of water power from the Lehigh River. With the location of a repair facility here and its regional operations, the Lehigh Valley Railroad became for years a major employer of thousands of people from the area. Post-World War II railroad and industry restructuring led to job and population losses.

I have had friends rave about this place when they have been up the poconos! I am so glad I never wasted my families time coming here for just the store! We were on our way home from a pocono trip and thought we would finally check this place out... It was really odd. Trust me Cracker Barrel is a great experience compared to this store. The stuff is completely over priced and not even in the best condition. Things are broken and laying around. Their prices for small items are just crazy. You can do better in a gift shop or AC Moore. There really is nothing great about this place. I saw so many people just coming in and looking around. Trust me I wanted candles and home items for the holidays and their selection was over priced and just old looking. Their Christmas items look like they have been sitting around for years not to mention they are selling ornaments dated 2015? Nothing new. I just can't say this place is anything exciting. Save your money and your car ride if you are just going to make a trip there. I would only go if I were in the area then again I have have no need to ever go back! I don't like they sell animals at all either! If you like old beat up items - this is the place for you! Over priced junk is just what this place serves up! TOTAL TOURIST TRAP!

While not as large as many antique malls I've visited, this one is nice and neat, prices are good, and staff is welcoming, Some hand made soaps are offered by the cut-your-own slice, and upstairs by the bar along with some new gift items, Some furniture is for sale, but "smalls" dominate the offerings.

Past 2 yrs we have gone to Jim Thorpe to do a summer rafting trip with 3 families which consists of 12 boys ranging from 5-14. The rafting outfit we usually book was soldout for the days we needed so we went with this one. Booking was fine, the actual location has a very nice set-up with a pond and volleyball court and on-site café for quick bites. The prep-time was efficient, great instruction, timely. The problem started while on the water...I get it, there are lots of people in one trip-all different levels, it's an easy rafting trip, etc etc, but this is the first time all of our three families, including the kids were BORED to tears on this trip. Why? The guides - were awful. We actually had to pull over 3 times because we had to wait for late trailers. Pulling over - entailed grabbing onto branches (if you could) and holding on for 10 minutes+ not knowing what the heck was going on. REALLY? watching the group, super hard for some people to do. On top of that, the girl who was supposed to be 'the mother duck in front' who we were to stay behind at all times was only in that 'role' for the first 3 miles and then was MIA-or in the back. Again, no communication. Suddenly a new person was in front and then you got yelled at if you didn't stay behind a different 'mother duck'. If people were lagging behind, isn't it the job of all the guides to divide and conquer and collaborate to move people along so everyone has an enjoyable time regardless of level? It's their jobs-they are 'teachers'... To top it all off, when we pulled in at the end, there seemed to be a tiff between the guides vs. the guys hauling the rafts -lots of aggression by the crew throwing rafts and buckets upon clean-up. Then our bus driver was yelling at the guide on our bus about team work and how it's supposed to work - all in front of the rafters on the bus, IE, 'clients'. This was actually COMICAL. Therefore, the whole rafting portion of this experience seemed very rooky - the guides were not a team whatsoever. Will never use this outfit again and we will all go back to JTRA for next summer's trip.

Old Jail Museum

On the beautiful hike up West Broadway Street toward the jail, I saw some folks coming back down the hill and asked their thoughts. Mixed reviews. They said the line was long but wasn't moving much. My wait was around 40 minutes but on such a beautiful night (10/28/17) I didn't mind. The tour guides were mostly kids and it was apparent they worked very hard on getting the information to the group in a time friendly, amusing, and informative manner. I would have liked a little more time in the main block to explore the cells, but I believe this can be done on a regular daytime tour.

On the way out through the gift shop, I purchased a book "Ghosts of the Molly Maguires?" and the woman checking me out asked if I wanted it autographed. I said of course, but by who? She responded with my mom! I had no idea the owner of the jail and author of the book was standing right behind me. What a treat! This struck up a conversation with Betty Lou McBride of how she and her husband came to be owners of the Old Jail Museum and several buildings in Jim Thorpe. What a treasure and memory I will hold dear.

Crammed full with people walking almost a mile down a busy highway to get in. People parked in the middle of the road, bathrooms disgusting, garbage everywhere, dirty diapers on the beach. Seems like every group of people brings a stereo system and you have 10 different stations blaring full volume. The water is gross with garbage and diapers in it, and frequently shut down due to bacteria.

We had not planned to visit the church but our family was walking up Race Street, saw the open door and decided to step inside. We were greeted by very friendly and knowledgeable individuals happy to share the stories of the church's history and beautiful architecture and windows. The first floor was the chapel and in it's own was beautiful. We thought that was it but took a ride up the old fashioned elevator to the second level and saw the actual church. The floors were unique and first thing that stood out. Then you take in the alter, pews and beautiful windows. We learned a lot about the Packer family and their ties to the church. So glad we decided to step inside otherwise we would have missed this gem.

Had a blast whitewater rafting on the Lehigh River with this company! Shaun our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us a personalized and fun experience! We went with my son's Boy Scout troop and we had 29 in our group. Highly recommend this company for a more personalized experience. Their rafts are self bailing so no worries about it filling up with water. If you're looking for a great experience try Extreme Adventure Travel!!

What a great spot. We stayed at an Inn nearby and stopped in during a near monsoon downpour! We tasted the options and were blown away, we LOVED almost every option, we bought 4 of I think maybe 6 options. The fact that some proceeds benefit animal shelters with the fact that I am a wino makes this place 5 stars for me. Worth a stop.

Glen Onoko Falls Trail

Visited here on 2/19/2018 in the early afternoon. No one else on the trail. It is not as challenging as some other reviewers have mentioned. Visited with children and adults, and even with snow and ice covered parts of the path, we had no problem. No fee to park, and when you go down the stairs, you can go either to the left to the river or to the right and up to the falls. Spent about an hour, taking photos and just sitting on some rocks enjoying the views.
