A 24-minute Shinano train ride from Karuizawa then a 3-minute walk. Exit Komoro Station, walk to the left then take the underground passage. It costs 300 yen during the day but seems to be free at night during the annual Sakura Festival (桜まつり), with lanterns tastefully lighting up the place 'til 10 pm. It took us an hour to slowly walk through the place. The last train back to Karuizawa is at 10:37 pm. There are only 1 or 2 trains per hour so time it well.
The photos online really don't do this place justice. There are more than 400 cherry blossom trees here but it's much larger and more beautiful than I thought and also much less crowded than any hanami spot in Tokyo. This year the sakura here reached full bloom 2 weeks after Tokyo and it was also 10 degrees colder in mid April.
There's a pretty large area to sit under trees if you bring your own tarp and a small restaurant selling drinks and hot food. Make sure you climb up see the blossoms from above. It was like a dream!!Absolutely gorgeous! We were both very impressed. Definitely recommended.

I lived in Komoro for 7 years and climbed up to this temple many times. It is a short, steep climb but only takes about 30 minutes. Craggy boulders and steep rock walls line the path. At the top there is a small Buddhist shrine perched on a cliff with a spectacular view of the Chikumagawa valley and Mt. Asama in the distance. This takes some energy and careful footing but is well worth the effort in any season.

Komoro Castle Otemon

Komoro Castle features an original ōtemon (main gate) and Sannomon (gate to third bailey). The Ishigaki (stone walls) at Komorojō are vast and impressive, incorporating large blocks. One three-tiered portion of Ishigaki is built from black volcanic rocks. The first three pictures here are in order as follows: the Ōtemon, the Tenshudai (donjon platform) and Sannomon.
History:
Takeda Shingen founded Komorojō in 1554. Tokugawa Ieyasu took the castle in 1583 and installed as castellan Sengoku Hidehisa from 1590. Sengoku Tadamasa, Hidehisa’s son, ruled subsequently, and, using castle-building skills he would utilise throughout his career, he built up the castle to what we see today, including constructing the Ōtemon and the tenshu (main keep). The tenshukaku (donjon) unfortunately burned down in 1626 after being struck by lightning and was subsequently not rebuilt. Flooding and temporary abandonment affected the castle throughout the Edo period and remaining castle structures were destroyed during the Meiji Restoration apart from the two gates: the Ōtemon (circa 1600) and Sannomon (first built in 1615, and rebuilt in 1765 after being destroyed by flooding). The Ōtemon is beautifully designed and is around 400 years old.

This is the best place to relax, have a snack and watch people passing in and out of Komoro train station. When it's warm, there are tables outside surrounded by a garden and small florist. Prices are typical but service is always with a smile and warm welcome.
