Monument Mosquito Oilman

Reviewed By JonBurgwald - Copenhagen, Denmark

If you're contemplating a trip to Russia, but don't know whether to aim for the Winter Palaca in St. Petersburg or St. Basils in Moscow, then your own, personal Sophies Choice ends here, when this third option is added to the mix.
The Mosquito Oilman in Usinsk is a unique masterpiece, which might be dwarfed by Michelangos David (but only might!). It encapsules the region in one unique piece, and the combination of the blood-sucking mosquito (and oh yes, you wont lack mosquitos, when in Usinsk) and the oilman is nothing short of perfect. In a region, where you always can find your own private oil spill to chill by, this monument in deep (unintended) sarcasm vividly describes, how the oil companies are sucking the blood from the land, leaving it barren and destroyed.
If you're lucky enough to be there around Christmas, they even dress it up as a mosquito Santa. As a symbol for the oil industry, he might destroy your livelihood, your rivers and your Forests, but he'll be kind enough to leave a small present behind...

This museum was very interesting, including a wealth of information about the Komi people, e.g. daily life, traditions, history, culture, hunting, fishing. If you are interested in textiles, it has a lot of examples drawn from special occasions e.g. weddings to ordinary clothing, spinning. We had a guide, which made the visit much more interesting. Interpretive material is in Russian.

Monument to the Letter O

Reviewed By MaximRussiaItalian - Krasnodar, Russia
