Oak Crest Vineyard and Winery

The wine was fantastic and the amish cheese is a perfect accompaniment. There is not an abundance of seating available, but there are several tables - some inside and some out. Sitting outside, it was so peaceful and a large wooded area. You can just sit and listen to the birds chirping. The woman working was so nice and was happy to let us take our time and relax. Also, if you've visited any Virginia wineries, you probably expect to pay a minimum of $20 per bottle for wine. These were very reasonably priced. In fact, my favorite was only $15. I wish this winery wasn't so far from my home, or it might become my new favorite.

We drove through the park and read the numerous informative plaques along the way to learn about the battles that were fought. We were very impressed by the Civil War soldiers, the challenges they faced, and either overcame or succumbed to. It is a humbling history lesson and makes me appreciate all that our military do to serve our great country-past and present. United we stand!

Highly recommended. Stayed with cousins in Fredricksburg and they drove us to the Chesapeake bay area for a wine tour. Had no clue Virginia had a wine region! We only had time for one stop and they chose this vineyard not being too far. What a delight. We brought our own picnic and ate in the courtyard along with our newly purchased light red Blue crab. Brought home several bottles. Went on a weekday and we were lucky to have all the attention to ourselves as we heard the weekends can be busy.

Went on a Sunday, midday, and saw only a handful of other people. The grounds were immaculate and include a replica house, barn, workshop, cookhouse, garden, visitor center, a few trails, stunning scenery of the Potomac, and farm animals (cows and pigs).

The highlight was unwittingly stumbling upon the start of a tour of the replica house, given by a highly knowledgeable and well-spoken park ranger. I'm not sure how often those tours are, if they're offered only certain days or times or when a certain number of people are onsite, but it definitely added to the experience.

It's free, gorgeous, interesting, and definitely worth checking out if you're remotely curious about where George Washington was born and/or his early life.

I'm not a drinker so anyone can come and enjoy a wonderful lunch. This is slightly costly for the average folk but its worth it!!

With a few ladies I attended a Tea & tour here. Initially I thought the house looked some what sparce, and the lighting seemed too current for a historic home, but we had made such a long drive I thought I might as well try to take it all in and see the hidden gems that might be lurking past the first lace.

The Tea: Similar to my first impressions of the house: the food looked small in portion and I was disappointed there was not a formal printed menu like many historical venue teas ...but then I tasted the food - AHHHmazing, delicious, simply perfection. The chef/tour guide/caretaker knows what she is doing and does it well!! What I thought were small portions - turned out to be just right! Our guide did rush us towards the end which displeased me as I truly wanted to take a bit longer to savor the absolutely wonderful tea and tantalizing morsels.

Tour - After the tea the lady of the house gave us a tour of the manor. She was very quick to keep our group on point as far as moving along. Again I wasn't pleased....but when she went through the house I understood why. The house, grounds and even the furniture is filled with history!! Not just a line or two but stories upon stories. So much so that the tour easily could of been several hours long. Now I saw why she was so vigilant on keeping us moving along - there was so much to tell! I loved the add ins about the 80 ghosts keeping residence there.

I admit I was put off initially by the lady's manner but there was a method to the madness and in the end I enjoyed visiting with her and seeing the grounds. It was well worth the drive and price.

Westmoreland State Park

A state park that consists of rivefront beaches, hiking trails, and boat rentals over 1,300 acres.

Reviewed By Claire M - Charlottesville, Virginia

Many of the Virginia State Parks offer reasonably priced cabins, and the park is a wonderful place to stay and to get away from the stress of our daily lives. Don't expect WiFi or TV's, so you can really unplug. During the summer season, a minimum stay is a week. However, as you get closer to a weekday stay, if there is availability, you can stay for a shorter time. The park is on cliffs that overlook the Potomac. We recently stayed at one of the original log cabins built in the 30's by the Civilian Conservation Corp. The cabin was charming, with a great stone fireplace and front porch that looked out on a view that would have been the same as it looked in the 30's. There are hiking trails, kayaks and paddle boards for rent, and a fabulous 50 meter pool. The cabins are basic, with a full kitchen. Our 2 bedroom was about $125 a night. There are grocery stores on the way to the park, so best to come with food, though there is a small country store at the park entrance. If you are a history buff, don't miss Stratford Hall just down the road, Robert E. Lee's birthplace. You can also visit Washington's birthplace. The park also allows dogs for a nominal fee. The original log cabins don't have screen porches, but the newer cabins do. There are also campsites for those wanting to camp.

The strawberries are reasonably priced at this pick your own place. We just went for the strawberries but there were families having picnics. Apparently at certain times of the year they have tractor rides and there is neat elevated walkway for the goats. The strawberries were fresh and sweet and there were plenty to pick.
