The 10 Best Things to Do in Karpathos, Greece

November 10, 2017 Hector Krause

Karpathos (Greek: Κάρπαθος, Greek pronunciation: [ˈkarpaθos]) is the second largest of the Greek Dodecanese islands, in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Together with the neighboring smaller Saria Island it forms the municipality of Karpathos, which is part of the Karpathos regional unit. Because of its remote location, Karpathos has preserved many peculiarities of dress, customs and dialect, the last resembling those of Crete and Cyprus. The island has also been called Carpathus in Latin, Scarpanto in Italian and Kerpe in Turkish.

The driving to the beach is a little bit tricky on the way down, but as such there is a beautiful view from the top of the mountain, beach itselve is nice with pebbles and clear waters but Karpathos has certainly better Beaches than Apella.

Diakoftis Beach

This beach is absolutely breathtaking, with its fine white sand and clear azure water. The only setback with this fantastic place is that it tends to be very windy here, rendering all residing on the sand very difficult and on some days, virtually impossible. We have been regular visitors to Karpathos for the last 12 years, and we have only been there 4 times, due to weather conditions. Diakoftis is on the Southern part of the island, close to the airport and windsurfers' paradise area; a very flat and open location. So, always ask one of the locals; they know when to visit Diakoftis and it took us 5 years to find the right weather situation. But when it's right- a fantastic place to visit!!

The beach is generally small, has sooo nice Emerald color and usually is not so windy! So you can choose it for the days with lot of wind.
There are umbrellas for rent, but you can also just lay on the beach. Of course it's absolutely clean.

Beautiful, clear beach with water, which is beautiful and steep, catchy and the bottom is rocky. The road is well-defined and about 4 km long, it is worthwhile to go earlier this morning, because after lunch the beach is full of crowds and lots of cars. It is advisable to ride along the asphalt road, but when arriving by the Spoa, also before the gravel road shows down the beach, it's not recommended to drive it is very steep and definitely needs a 4x4 drive

There is a close parking area and services around the beach. You can take umbrellas close to the sea but it's not so great as other part of the island.

Agios Theodoros

Reviewed By Lilopilo123 - Vienna, Austria

This beach is a great example of the many wind-shielded coves and bays on the windy very island of Karpathos. On the plateau above the beach the wind blows pretty strong but down at the beach it's hot, the water is calm. This beach is rather small, if you plan to stay here the entire day come early to grab one of the umbrellas (1 umbrella + 2 sunbeds = 6 euro for the day). The water is very clear and the beach consists of fine gravel and sand. Some people were using the clay from the cove for face masks and whole body "wraps". There's a taverna up on the cliffs were you park the car.

Despite my negative feelings of these places where persons are trying to persuade you to look at their menu card we went into this place without checking the menu card, because menu cards in my opinion do not give me a clue about atmosphere or quality of food or service, mostly for the reason that tjhe place looked ok and was situated nicely.
The food and service was very much ok, as it is most places in this area.

Agios Nikolaos Beach

This beach, with crystal clear waters, even if average in atmosphere, is strategically located in order to be closed to Votsalo restaurant (very good taverna) having breakfast while waiting' for Vasilis and his fantastic water taxi. He will show you, for a incredibly reasonable price per person, some of the most beautiful Beaches of the island, not reachable by car (caves and abundance of small rocks and swim thru) and at the end you are entitled to be "abandoned" on your favorite and picked up at the end (or half, you choose the time of pick up) of your sunny day. It's the most valuable service of Karpathos island, don't miss it. We were really happy to be alone of along day on a solitary beach !
