In some sense, I am not even sure that this island in the Mekong is a "sight". There are no tickets, no obvious attractions, no tour guides and no signboards or other tourist information. It is just a geographical feature really.
On the other hand, it offers authentic vistas of rural Khmer life, with wooden houses on stilts, corn and rice fields, haystacks, water buffalo and people going about their daily lives. You can drive over the new concrete bridge and continue on (via ferry) to the extraordinary wooden pagoda of Maha Leap. By bike, it can offer an interesting rural adventure.

For anybody interested in history, this place is a must visit. I loved the mix of ancient and modern which gave it a feeling of continuity throughout the ages.
We came across a couple who were having their wedding photos taken and this place seems popular for this as the surroundings certainly add to the atmosphere of the photography.

This temple pre dates the Angkor temple complex built by the Chenla Empire in 8th century.It showcases the superb architecture of the time There are 291 steps to climb or go by vehicle, Views across the Mekong and countryside are wonderful. This is a regular stop if you are on a Mekong River cruise.otherwise doubt if you would visit.
Huge sculptures of fruit and vegetables seem rather out of place with the orange clan monks wandering the grounds
Lots of locals asking visitors to buy books and pens for the children

I am not sure it is worth going to Phnom Srey as it is much more of a walk and climb. Phnom Pros is a big site with a major temple and has a relatively short stairway. The main reason for coming is to see (and perhaps feed) the monkeys. This is an excellent site for animal photography because the monkeys take relatively little notice of humans. The cost of entry is included in the payment at Wat Nokor Bachey (about $3 for all three).

Very recommended side trip offering a glimpse of the Cambodian countryside, albeit a little sanitzed version thereof due to Amica's management. Don't forget to buy their handmade items (silk pieces are rather scarce, but many cotton items manly korma) are available. Lovely tour by the manager/guide. Don't miss this opportunity. Not touristy.

We visited this tower as a family (Mum, Dad and 3 kids aged 9, 7, 5) as part of a tuk tuk tour. We found our driver to be very helpful with explaining the history and meaning behind this tower. We thought we would give it a go to climb up the ladder inside the tower, but not only was it very step, it was also very wobbly! Only made it up 2 levels.

While no one ever complained that Cambodia was a land lacking in temples and pagodas, one thing it does not have is many wooden temples. Apparently Wat Maha Leap is one of only two surviving wooden wats in the country. It is still little-known but with Kampong Cham now increasingly popular on the overland route between Cambodia and Laos, it seems destined to become a famous attraction.
The exterior and interior are both beautiful, covered with woodcarving, stonecarving, paintings and gold stencilling. Overall, it is reminiscent of the wooden temples of Lanna (Northern Thailand), yet there are some differences. This wat does not have the low-weeping eaves of a Thai wat, for example. Anyway, it is a must-see for fans of traditional architecture.

Mr Vannat took 3 French ladies and myself on an extended day trip. I particularly wished to see the last remaining wooden pagoda in Cambodia, and luckily, he used to teach at the school next to the pagoda. He conversed easily in both French and English, and ensured that we saw many sights including a rubber plantation and factory and several temples. We even had a cup of tea at his house with his family. he was very knowledgeable, and even provided masks when we encountered road works on a dusty road.
I was intrigued by the delicacies on a roadside stall, but graciously declined a taste.

Should you find yourself in Kampong Cham for a couple of days we would recommend this tour. This is a small organisation that is trying to get tourism off the map in Kampong Cham.
The tour consisted of a few sites that to be honest weren't all that especially having spent time in Siem Reap, but going through the countryside seeing all the locals and the general feel of this location was our highlight. Also they take you to an Eco-village again a highlight.
A tip for the Eco-village - take pens and paper for the village kids!!!!
