Jedburgh Abbey

One of the four border abbeys, Jedburgh Abbey was founded by David I in around 1138 for Augustinian canons. Explore the fascinating Jedburgh Abbey along with its visitor centre and surrounding herb garden with aromatic plants and a stone display at the west end. The church was built in the Romanesque and early Gothic styles and is remarkably complete. Jedburgh Abbey’s close location to the English border meant it was frequently targeted by invading border armies. Remains of the cloister buildings have been uncovered and finds from the excavations, including the 12th century 'Jedburgh comb' and an eighth century shrine are on display.

Really interesting, lovely walk and the audio tour is good. It's a beautiful place. The staff are great too, always polite and chatty
I recommend either becoming a historic Scotland member, getting an explorer pass or using English heritage cards if you have them. Lots of Castles and Abbeys in the area.

Mary Queen of Scots House

This 16th-century fortified house was visited by the queen in 1556 and now contains an exhibition dedicated to her life.

Reviewed By tandft - Auckland, New Zealand

I found this attraction mildly interesting but probably because we had heard so much of the Mary story from other places we had visited previously. It is also quite small and as it was a rainy day it was busy and became difficult to move through the house. It is well maintained though and worth leaving a donation for them to be able to continue with this important piece of history.

Jedburgh Castle & Jail Museum

Not knowing what to really expect, I think we were pleasantly surprised by the gaol and the condition to which it has been maintained. There is a lot of information in the museum part, a lot to absorb but still very interesting. The information is abundant in the handheld audio players and the display boards. An added bonus for us with a link to our family name mentioned a few times. Worth a stop and admission is free or by donation.

Stumbled on this place by chance, it didn't look to impressive at first as the road up to it was pretty poor, but when we got inside we loved it, we had tea and cakes outside as the weather was nice, we would definitely recommend...MoreI'm glad you enjoyed your visit to Woodside - its quite an unexpected oasis is the woods! I can not recommend this place enough! Absolutely brilliant. Pauline who owns/runs this crafts place was the most friendliest, welcoming lady. My self and stepson spent nearly a whole day here and decided we wanted to have a go at sand blasting, which was really fun and great when we saw the results of our art work on glass bowl/glass jar. There was so much to choose from no child of any age would be bored here! Pauline is a professional engraver one of her many skills and it was a delight to look at some of her art work. We shall be back soon for another visit.
