I stopped in Grottaglie to check out the Quartiere de Ceramiche. I bought some of the traditional white pomegranates and lamps as well as a white lady at Giuseppe Fasano (cash only, ATM in the castello a block away) on via Crispi at the corner of Via Caravaggio 3. However, just off via Crispi on via Leone XII I found several places that had more colorful pieces. I bought some traditional figurines (man and woman) and other colorful items for a good price at Stefano Monteforte (via Leone XII, 5). Other places in Puglia have some of these pieces, but Grottaglie has a street that has very good selection and the best prices. They say they will ship, but I had them pack carefully and took the pieces with me. So if you can get there, then make hte stop--except not from 1:30 to 4:30, as many of the stores close....

Andati di sabato sera, che dire ho mangiato una delle pizze piu' buone della mia vita e non esagero, cominciamo con il dire che la location è molto bella, arredata modernamente ma con stile, forno a legna, vi è il servizio self-service ma c'è tutto a portata di mano, il personale preposto comunque è attento alle tue esigenze e disponibile, si può prendere oltre la pizza le varie patatine, crocchette ect.ect.. ottima scelta di bevande, sia birra, a tal proposito consiglio il bicchierone da 2 o 3 litri ovviante in base al proprio numero di commensali, sia di liquori (d'altronde è anche bar). Ma il piatto forte è la pizza, fantastica ottimo impasto, condite come non mai, non si lascia nulla e lo stomaco non ne risente iper-digeribili, i prezzi delle stesse economici rispetto allo standard di altri locali. Lo consiglio vivamente io ci tornerò spesso e volentieri. Complimenti

Chiesa rupestre posta all'interno di una lama profonda cinque metri, caratterizzata dalla presenza di molteplici grotte che si aprono sui costoni.
Grotte che, scavate nella tarda età del bronzo per le sepolture, vennero utilizzate come abitazioni almeno fino al XIV secolo.
La costruzione della chiesa ipogea avvenne in periodi diversi. Infatti tra l'XI ed il XII secolo fu scavato il vestibolo, il naos (presbiterio) con l'altare rivolto ad oriente e le nicchie di servizio accanto all'altare. La primitiva chiesa fu dedicata a San Giorgio.
Tra il XII ed il XIV secolo venne scavato un secondo ipogeo ad uso funerario, con ingresso autonomo, caratterizzato da nicchie-cappelle laterali, nell'ultima delle quali fu dipinta l'effigie della Vergine con il Bambino rappresentata come l'Eleousa bizantina (Madonna della tenerezza).
Infine verso la fine del XVI secolo fu abbattuta la parete rocciosa che divideva i due ipogei. Ulteriori scavi ingrandirono la cripta e spostarono nel nuovo presbiterio il monolite con l'immagine della Madonna.
Una passeggiata nel parco circostante la lama, il percorso all'interno della lama, la sosta più o meno prolungata all'interno della cripta, soprattutto nei giorni di scarsa affluenza di visitatori, possono suscitare sensazioni intense, legate forse alle vicissitudini di altri tempi.
Un piccolo neo è costituito dal fatto che, nelle varie fasi che hanno portato al recupero ed alla ristrutturazione del complesso, qualcuno ha deciso di passare uno strato di vernice trasparente lucida sugli affreschi, probabilmente per proteggerli dal degrado ambientale.
Andrebbero invece salvaguardati in modo più efficace, in considerazione della bellezza e della pregevole fattura.

Dressed home, it is located in Grottaglie (Taranto), in the heart of the picturesque District of Ceramics in via Crispi 63 / a. The site is open to the community to accommodate temporary Exhibitions dedicated to the culture clay grottagliese. Inside it preserves a medieval cave church recently discovered, exceptional artistic testimony dating back to the thirteenth century. Visited during the temporary Exhibitions or by appointment.

Ho visitato la Gravina delle Murge di Villa Castelli pensando di trovarmi difronte un posto non molto bello ma comunque curato e ben tenuto e invece è stato il contrario. Il posto è piccolo ma è davvero molto bello e ben fatto, una perla di bellezza della città. Peccato però che sembra non ci sia un minimo di manutenzione, i rifiuti sono ovunque e gli alberi non sono curati. Pare che sia un luogo abbandonato a se stesso e al divertimento dei vandali. Un vero peccato dal momento che tale bellezza potrebbe essere una meta turistica da sfruttare meglio. Al di là delle note negative consiglio comunque di visitarlo se vi trovate di passaggio a Villa Castelli.

People very kind at the reception.Hand-worked ceramic ware are showed in some rooms of the castle,some are ancient other of the modern time.Sometime there are particular Exhibitions.I suggest to park the car outside the centre of Grottaglie and enjoy as well the narrows old streets of the city centre.
In August 2014 , on Saturdays the castle remains open from 10/13 and 17/23 p.m.Check other timetable.
I suggest to visit in the evening.Little Gardens inside.Free of charge.

Me and 2 friends decided to get some italian classes during our holiday in Italy and we ended up at Maria's . We had the best time together with Maria's parents and some other international students (australia , us , saoudi arabia , scotland ...) the best times were when we sat all together at the dinner enjoying Maria's mum homecooked menue . Every day was great fun , I would do it again !
