If you are interested in history then both the samovars and the building(c.late 19th century) in which the museum is housed is well worth a visit. There are over 500 samovars on display in various shapes and sizes: egg, acorn, Greek vase, sphinx, etc. This is one of the largest Exhibitions of its kind in Russia. I had always understood that samovars were tea-drinking vessels, but apparently they have had various uses in the past - shaving vessels, for example. We were a little rushed and would liked to have spent more time here. (I didn't have time to take very many photos unfortunately!) The museum is open from 9 am-5 pm Monday to Friday and 10 am-4 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Entry costs 50 roubles.There was a very nice modern cafe with delicious coffee just around the corner from the museum.The town of Gorodets also is worth visiting as it has much interesting wooden architecture, although it is a little off the beaten track. We were lucky enough to view this town during our river cruise from Moscow to Astrakhan.

The museum staff make the best of their two tiny rooms fully packed with lots of wooden molds for the local specialty ginger cakes, the ancient technology is still kept a secret but the interested visitor gets to know a lot about ginger cake culture and some of the local history, the museum shop offers souvenir molds and a few recepies for homework))

Gorod Masterov is a interesting stop when visiting Gorodets. Basically, it is a place where local masters of art crafts display their techniques and sell there creations. You have wood carvers, pottery, ceramic figures, weavers to name a few. The atmosphere is very "native" because the whole intent was to create the historical context of the craftspeople.
Our tour guide mentioned that the goods that can be found here are usually more expensive than what can be found in the main part of the town because they are catering to the river cruise ship crowd and bigger tour groups that don't usually wander to many places. So, if you have the time, browse here and buy elsewhere if expense is a concern for you. Otherwise, its a great place to support the local artisans.

В музее собран огромный материал по истории народных промыслов городецкой земли, коллекция археологических находок из раскопок средневекового города. Представлен Крестьянский быт, Купеческий Городец, Коллекция оружия и много всего интересного.

It`s a cosy little museum worth visiting in Gorodets before you go for the matrioshkas. Frankly, I was impressed to know Countess Panina was the first female minister in the world and in Russia (under Kerensky gvt, for just a short while), it`s a pity they have not so much left of the house interior, they just reconstructed a couple of rooms including library and also have a nice collection of old female dress, the museum guide was real good, we went in a big group and enjoyed being there.

Памятник Александру Невскому находится на набережной Городца. В Городце великий полководец принял схиму , а на следующий день умер в Феодоровском монастыре. Памятник открыт 1993 году , скульптур из Санкт-Петербурга И.И. Лукин, а архитекторы местные В.В. Иванов и В.Н. Быков. Открытие и освящение монумента приурочили к 730-й годовщине смерти благоверного князя Александра Ярославовича Невского.

The church was beautifully restored from zero in 2009, the monastery itself has a very long and interesting history, better go with a guide to know more on Alexander Nevsky and the role of monasteries in the medieval Russia

Умельцы, знающие секреты работы с деревом создают настоящие произведения искусства. Начали мы экскурсию с экспериментальной лаборатории, затем посетили музей фабрики с Натальей Семеновной. Посетили иконописную мастерскую, в которой возрождена технология старинной иконописи. Закончили путешествие в магазине. Всё это просто ЧУДО! Советую заказывать экскурсию на фабрику.

Земляная крепость была построена в 12 веке для защиты от врагов. Защищала город с трех сторон. Высота вала до 10 метров. Сейчас осталось около 600 метров вала и крепостного рва.
