Gerani Beach

Reviewed By NeilAB - Whitley Bay, England

We only discovered Gerani bay towards the end of our holiday so didn't use it as much as it deserved. A mixture of tourists and locals enjoyed the small beach and the protected bay with crystal clear water. As elsewhere on Crete the water is very salty so floating requires no energy at all. Everyone seemed to swim/float wearing caps so from a distance all that was visible were a lot of white dots on the water. Lots of small fish are visible, even without snorkelling gear; expect a few little nips from them. There is a free (open air) shower facility to get rid of the salt and an adjacent taverna (only Greek coffee- no lattés or cappuccinos !)
The beach is only a couple of minutes off the main E75 National road and there is parking for about 15 cars.
A safer place for children to swim than the more exposed open stretches of nearby Episkopi beach.

Episkopi Beach

Reviewed By grungeful - Amman, Jordan

We really liked going to this beach. Sun bed and parasol for free. Once in a while a waitress from the taverna inquires on whether you would like something to drink, never harassing you to consume. Coffee and freshly squeezed juices for a reasonable price. The highlight is the taverna under a pine forest, with grass where kids can run freely and play on the playground. Relaxing experience for both parents and kids.

Gorge of Mili

We stopped off from the City bus tour to walk down through here. A very pleasant, peaceful couple of hours and a quirky taverna at the bottom. Get prepared beforehand with sensible footwear, water etc and maybe a little research, so that you know what to look for and what you are looking at. Met some people who were actually walking UP the gorge. Rather them than me

Minoiko Nekrotafeio Armenon

Reviewed By KarooChick - South Africa

We popped in here for 15 minutes. This is no longer free. You have to buy a ticket on entry.
The graves are very interesting and certainly inspire you to find out more. Quite a lot of English info on the board as you come in.
If you walk down into the largest grave a light comes on automatically.
The oak forest around the graves is very pretty and peaceful. It's cool and shady on a hot day.

Agios Nikolaos Chapel

Reviewed By mediterraneanmel - Worcester, United Kingdom

Got to be done but a bit tricky to get to especially if the rocky pathway is a bit slippy. At night time with a red moon over the sea of crete its very romantic and im told a very poplar wedding location. If you have a bit of a warped sense of humour you want to take a sit in the cantina beach bar looking towards the chapel and watch some hilarious antics of people taking the walk but thankfully have never seen anybody fall in.

Chromonastiri Military Museum

The building was built in 1610 and was the summer residence of the noble Venetian family "Clodius". Villas were mainly of agricultural and stockbreeding character, as shown by their architecture which, other than the main manor house, it included rooms for workers and spaces for warehouses and stables. The museum has 8 chambers full of artifacts from various periods of international history. Summer opening hours: Mondays,Saturdays closed , Tuesday-Friday 8:00-14:00 , Sundays 10:00-15:00

Set in a beautiful restored villa, this is a small and interesting exhibition relating to WW2 and the Ottoman war. I felt it was a work in progress as at times it seemed a little sparse. However the young soldiers who oversee the place are very informative and helpful in their explanation of how the museum was founded. Some of the images are very poignant, and it is right that these events should be remembered as part of this Islands history...

Maxis Traditional Handmade Ceramic Shop

Rethymnon Old Town

Reviewed By dalton1skiing - London

The old town is a maze of narrow back streets, shops, market stalls and restaurants. Its easy to lose your bearings & end up going in the opposite direction, so take a map! The streets are cobbled, so wear comfy shoes and not heels! Certainly worth a look when in the area.

Rethymnon Beach

Reviewed By Belgo96 - Australia

It is a clean beach that appears sandy but there are some stones near the waterline. Lots of sun beds for hire. It was too busy when we were there and I personally think there are nicer Beaches in Crete and certainly more calmer ones. There are plenty of restaurants and Beaches across from the beach once you are finished on the beach.
