Bridge of Khalkis

The place where the bridge is built, is the narrowest point of the channel, and the water current can reach the speed of 15km (9 miles) per hour! It is really interesting to watch the reversion of flow direction that happens about every 6 hours. The exact time of reversion is determined by the position of the moon.

What's interesting about an old fashioned bridge you might ask? Well there are two things to be honest. Maybe three. Yes, three. The third one is - it has an art gallery underneath it. Two - the water current changes underneath it every few hours during the day - the current pulls into one direction at a high speed, and then into the other direction. Interesting - right? One - it opens each night, and people both local and not gather to look at the boats using the opportunity to go through. All sorts of boats, small, big, medium. Interesting place. The time in which the bridge will be open is updated daily and displayed at both ends of the bridge. It's less convenient when you forget about it and head for a night out in the city, and then either on the way in or out the bridge is open, and you're forced to watch the boat "parade" ;)

Archaeological Museum of Eretria

The Archaeological Museum of Eretria is very easy to find, along the road running past Eretria, a lot of parking space. Very good for getting acquainted with local history. Strangely, captions in Greek and French only, no English. EU language policy after Brexit?

The Healing Thermal Springs of Edipsos

Reviewed By Siobhan D

Just outside the gates of the posh luxury spa hotel of Thermae Sylla is a small strip of beach over which flows the natural hotspring water as empties into the sea. The incredibly high mineral content has left an impressive a smooth layer of mineral rock pock-marked with little tide pools of various temperature. Sitting on the edge with your feet dipping into the sea, with a few waves to cool you, the therapeutic effects of the water can be taken even in the hit summer months. However, I had the thought when we were there, that the most amazing experience would be had in the colder months when the very hot water would feel soothing on cold stiff muscles and joints.
My husband and I really enjoyed swimming here and enjoyed the sensation of the thermal Springs, even though it was mid-summer. We stayed at the Thermae Syla and loved the pristine pools of the spa, but there was just something a little more magical in natural experience.
I don't know who wouldn't love this. Especially since it's totally free.

Karababa Castle

Reviewed By Nikos_and_Sophie - Athens, Greece

The view of the castle is very nice. You can see Chalkida from one end to the other.
The castle itself is not of interest. There is a venetian/ottoman wall round it in quite good condition, and a typical Greek church within the castle. That's all more or less.
It is a short hike from the city center (15-20 minutes).
Go only for the view.
Beware: it closes at 15:00.

Kalamos Beach

Reviewed By TinekeGroenewegen

Kalamos beach is a very pleasant beach and reminds us a little about one of the villages in the Cinque Terre in Italy; but then without the crowds. Beautiful setting!! Well known under Greek people, incl youngsters/students. A place where's more than just a beach: a diveschool; peddleboat and cayak rental, affordable and pleasant tavernas and people playing ballgames and/or great rocks to jump off... No problem to find a parkingspot in high season.

Saint David Monastery

Reviewed By Timothy B - Lucerne, Switzerland

Coming down the road from the Waterfalls of Drymona driving towards Rovies you come to the Monastery of Saint David. For a non orthodox person the small courtyard monastery offers a small rest break. We arrived at the Monastery where I donned a kilt over my shorts for religious sensibilities. In the centre of the courtyard is a small church where 'sweet smelling' relic is found. Outside is a grave to a monk who became highly sort after for his healing abilities. While we stood outside in shaded courtyard the monks also kindly offered us coffee and cake.
For the orthodox faithful the church is highly visited and respected.

Chiliadou Beach

One-hour drive from Kymi (despite only 25 km) through breath-taking landscapes, and you arrive hundreds of meters above the beach. Incredible Panorama!
Don't expect loud house music in your ears! There, almost everybody is from the village (with relatives and parents who come back there once a year) and they all know each other.
The water is the cleanest you can dream of and it's not even so cold.
You don't feel like driving back to your hotel.

Drakospita

Reviewed By Andrew C - Witney, United Kingdom

This is at the top of Mount Ochi, and it is quite a climb up the mountain to visit the dragon house. It is still in relatively good condition, and the views from the top of mount Ochi are worth the climb. There is also a little church at the top.
