The 10 Best Things to do in Es Castell, Balearic Islands

February 8, 2022 Elouise Mccaul

Es Castell (Spanish: Villacarlos) is a small municipality in eastern Menorca in the Balearic Islands, Spain. The town was founded in 1771 by British Col. Patrick Mackellar and was originally called Georgetown in honour of King George III; however, it takes its current name from the large fort nearby, known to the British as St. Philip's Castle. Col. Patrick MacKellar (Argyllshire 1717-1778) was the chief engineer of Menorca and his house today is known as Son Granot. Es Castell celebrates its Foundation Day on 1 June with 18th-century themed festivities, in which the Municipality itself, St. Philip's Castle Foundation, Son Granot and other institutions participate.

Castillo de San Felipe

Our guide, Fernando Serrano, was the most knowledgeable and engaging we have ever had. We were totally fascinated from start to finish. A wealth of interesting information about the history of the attraction and if this the sort of place you like to visit or are interested in the history of Menorca then this is a "must see" location. We were enthralled with the wealth of information provided with Fernando switching perfectly between two languages throughout. Enormously interesting. Whilst there is very little above ground of the castle, underground provides that wow factor. In time more history will be revealed as the castle's history comes to the fore through further restoration. Brilliant. This tour was the highlight of our recent stay in Menorca.
