... it might sound like the bubbles rising through clear water in the central pool of this astonishing ethnographic, ecological, spiritual monument to one man's visionary purpose. If you travelled in southern Morocco and visited no other place than this, you would not have wasted your time. Fascinating and deeply moving.

Ihmadi Trilobites Centre

Reviewed By Robert-Jan P - Zoetermeer, The Netherlands

I'm a mining engineer from TU Delft, I have basic geological training and during&after my studies I developed an interest in paleontology, I'm especially interested in trilobites and the Cambrian explosion. After seeing the Moroccan trilobites in 'First Life' by David Attenbourough Morocco was high on my bucket list.
When I booked a trip to Morocco with two friends I found two reviews of Mohand Ihmadi's excursion, one in Dutch and one in German, it looked promising so I contacted Mohand and I convinced my friends, who work in totally different fields, to visit the shop and take a tour. I expected a lot from this trip and it had to be entertaing for my friends as well. Before I left I spent three days on informing myself on fake trilobites, as an estimated 80% of the trilobites from Morocco are fakes.
We drove to Alnif early in the morning and after a short introduction in Mohand's shop we drove out to a riverbed where Ordovician trilobite nodules could be found. We didn't know what to expect so we were amazed when within five meters of the car Mohand picked up a rock, hit it with his geological hammer and out came a nice rusty trilobite. After the nodules we went to Devonian corals and trilobites in hard limestone outcrops of the same formation that makes up the famous Issoumour mountain. All along the way Mohand entertained us with not only geological and paleontological information but he also taught us a lot about Alnif and the Moroccan society. He told us that before he started his shop he worked in the area mapping the geology for the British Geological Survey, afterwards I found he holds a BSc in geology, in my opinion he is a very competent geologist.
At the second stop Mohand invited us to have lunch with him, his wife cooked a tasty Berber tajine for us and we had Moroccan tea, this is maybe not a standard part of the tour but I was very honored to have lunch with him and the conversations about the natural sciences and the regional economy were great. Mohand is very scientific and very positive, he's expanding his bussiness and he sees this as an opportunity to enhance the lives of people in Alnif.
We planned to go to the Cambrian shales in the area as well but the strong summer sun had already worn us out so after lunch (at around 15 o'clock) we decided to call it a day. Apparently in the Cambrian formations (north?)west of Alnif Paradoxides species can be found as brown imprints in the grey shales.
We went back to the shop and here I bought a load of trilobites for myself and my family, I didn't see a sign of any fakery and because I'm amazed by the schizochroal eyes of trilobites I had the feeling I didn't have to worry about it because these eyes are presumably almost impossible to economically fake. My friends didn't buy any trilobites as they were not as interested as me to start with and they found some specimen in the desert with which they were content. After the transaction we said goodbye to Mohand and I promised him to write this review.
All in all we were in and around Alnif for seven hours, it was an excellent trip and time&money was well spent, expectations were high and they were met, our precious time in Morocco was not wasted on this trip and I can recommend it to everyone interested in natural sciences.

Our trip to Morocco is all worthwhile because of Brahim and his team.
Originally, we only booked for 3 days with Brahim but ended up adding 2 more days (on the spot!).
Right from the emailing stage, Brahim has been very helpful. He really takes time in making sure we'll get the BEST out of the trip, e.g. by planning the routes to avoid busy traffic. Brahim is also flexible and understanding - because of some personal health reasons, I had to change locations and plans at a very late stage, but Brahim has no problems with it and even provided me with an upgrade to a 4X4 (without extra costs), so that I can travel more comfortably. (how thoughtful!).
Our tour guide was Ahmed. He is funny and knowledgable (yes, like he said, he is like a Morocco GPS!). Instead of bringing us to expensive, touristy locations, he know exactly where to stop by for a great Tajine or bbq lamb. And he was soooooooo nice, he welcomed us with open arms to his new born baby's naming celebration at his home. With him, we got the rare opportunity to see and experience the real local culture.
When I planned my trip, I was most eager to see the beautiful landscape and the architectures of Morocco (and for sure they have been amazing!!) but funny enough, when I think back, the most memorable of all is actually the experience (the eye-opener to the cultures and the friendships).
With that, I am very thankful to Brahim, Ahmed and team for giving me one of the most memorable trips I have ever had.

We booked our tour in Morocco with Sahara Dream Tour because it was recommended by Lonely Planet site. From the very beginning it was very well organised, we sent emails with our questions and received almost immediately responses from Ibrahim containing all necessary information. It was possible to build the trip the way we liked but honestly it was not required because it already was full of activities. at the airport we were met by Ibrahim who explained us the program for the next 10 days and took us to the hotel. After some rest we had a guided tour in the old city of Marrakech, lunch and after lunch Ibrahim took us to see a new part of Marrakech. The next day another driver was waiting to take us to the desert, Ouarzazate, Rissani etc. It was an amazing trip, the driver Amro was also our giude and he told us many things about Morocco which we would have never known by ourselves. We visited the most beautiful places, met interesting people, ate traditional food. I cannot think of any bad moment during this trip. The desert was fantastic. We stayed in a tent and had dinner under the stars. Then we returned to Marrakech and went to Essaouria for two days and then again to Marrakech to take our flight. Every hour of our trip was well planned by Sahara Dream Tours, there was no even one minute delay or fault, all the hotels were booked and were beautiful, the last two nights in Marrakech there were only two of us in the small hotel, and it was like staying at home of someone. we didnt have to worry about anything, Since we are from Italy, all our tour was in italian language, and our driver spoke Italian. I would highly recommend Sahara Dream Tour to everyone who wish to visit Morocco and doesnt know where to start from.
