Museum of the Albemarle

The Museum of the Albemarle promotes the understanding of history and material culture primarily of the Albemarle Region in which it is located and secondarily for the state of North Carolina for the educational benefit of all people. Through regional collections, historical interpretation, and professional assistance, the museum encourages citizens and visitors to explore and understand the past; to reflect on their own lives and their place in history; and to preserve regional history for future generations.

This museum is amazing. I really like how it's structured around a narrative of how the area was colonized and grew/changed through the generations. Beautifully arranged; gracious employees; incredibly clean -- some items almost glittered because they are so well-maintained. And its FREE.

This center is very inviting --for the nice layout of local artist jewelry, painting mixed media and even have a small theatre upstairs. Nice browsing. A recent exhibit of plain air was excellent as well as a small show from local young thespians.

This is a small children’s museum where my five-year-old niece spent an enjoyable hour or so last summer. Despite the small space, there were plenty of areas and activities for her to explore and keep her interest. Everything that was available was in working order, which kept the frustration level down as she tried out different activities. The staff was friendly. If there was a flaw, it was the lack of seating for adults to relax and get out of the kids’ way. This was a spur of the moment visit, so we didn’t have a chance to try out any of the organized events. But my niece enjoyed what was available and that made this a worthwhile part of our family’s day trip to Elizabeth City.

My wife and I had our own private lunch/tea to celebrate our 20th anniversery here and enjoyed every minute of this two hour experience. Tea incl small finger sandwhiches and several delicious baked sweets was fun and filling. Heirloom family service plates and silverware and furniture from owner and hostess Bonnie came with many interesting personal stories. HOuse tour added to the experience. Reservation required. Highly recommended for women and wives and girls for special occasion or just a trip back in time.

The Pines golf course in Elizabeth City offers players at every level an enjoyable golfing experience in a beautiful northeastern North Carolina setting. With numerous water hazards and fairway bunkers on both the front and back sides, the course generally calls for considerable accuracy off the tee, as well as in your approach shots to the putting greens. The greens are well protected, and there's usually plenty of trouble lurking if you don't stick them. Once on, you'll find them to roll very true and quite fast. While the course is not exceptionally long by most standards, it will prove to be a very fair test for players at all skill levels. My group thoroughly enjoyed our first-time outing there, and we will definitely play The Pines again.

One of the best quality beer selections for a small bar I've ever visited. Lot's of IPA's and Pilsners, even had a Lambic on draft. Price was right - about $5 a tall. Bar had bright TV's and all the sitting games (trivia, etc). If you are in Elizabeth City, and you like beer, this is a must stop!

We were amazed at the number of homes for sale around the lake close to the old down town area,it would appear that effort is being made to get the historic downtown area happening again but the local residents may be voting with their feet and leaving ? No accommodation so drive out of town away from the water views over the lake and horrid highway style accommodation surrounded by corporate fast food . Whats the story how come Americans just do not get that historic buildings, water wiews, decent food make a destination, perhaps they have never left thier state ? Wow they would be amazed at Denver or SantaFe.

This is a kind of out of the way hotel bar but it carries the NFL ticket AND has the best burger in Elizabeth City. On Tuesday's this burger is 5.00. I would put this immediately on your must do list.

The burger was hand formed and huge. It took me 2 bites just to get through each regular bite. It was cooked perfectly and the bun was toasted and there were a variety of options to put on it. I was pleasantly surprised by how great this burger was. I took a chance and I was really surprised. Elizabeth City has some nice food but this burger is worth going to this hotel bar for! If you are not a bar person get it to go!

Try it and report back!
