The 10 Best Things to Do in Easton, United States

March 4, 2018 Kiesha Cripe

Named one of the best small towns in America, Easton, Maryland is a haven of quiet streets and quirky festivals. First settled in the 17th century, Easton has remained an active community since Colonial times. The Third Haven Meeting House, built in 1682 by the local Quakers, is still used for Sunday meetings to this day. Visit during the annual Waterfowl Festival, when residents deck their historic homes with green boughs, and local artists pay tribute to the Canadian Geese flying overhead.

Avalon Theatre

Reviewed By P_Phogg - San Francisco

In the Heart of Easton, "The Avalon" anchors the theater district. With hundreds of shows per year it is amazing that their quality keeps up with the sheer quantity. . . but it does. Often some surprisingly "Big" shows come to town, and the locals know a secret. To get the best seats, you must be decisive and strike fast. The rest of us will meet in the general admission area, and it'll be a fun great show, but without our own reserved seating. Warning, the ticket buying locals are very quick!

The location of the Avalon theater is surrounded with pubs, restaurants, and art galleries. An evening stroll through the few blocks that make up 'downtown Easton' is a promenade through an earlier easier time. If the only walking one desires is between pubs, that can be a rewarding experience, as well as a very short walk between them.

Watch for events at "The Stoltz Listening Room". This is a cabaret upstairs within the theater where live music mingles with a wet-bar at the back of the room. Proven groups, and upstarts out to make their mark come frequently to entertain in this cabaret.

Weather you're enjoying 'The Stoltz' or 'The Avalon' you'll enjoy the 1920's decor, the street scene, pubs, restaurants nearby and the high quality of entertainment on offer.

Monday July 3 brought an Americana summer day straight from an Edward Hopper coffee table book of his existential cityscapes.

Strolling the shaded lanes of this town, we always find new architecture, maybe an open house from a friendly realtor, a comfortable lunch. Brookletts, Harrison, Aurora, Earle, South Streets .teem with lovingly cared for vintage houses, leafy crowned trees, even this art academy.

We had been here at this facility during popular festival days in Easton. Now, on a peaceful weekday, our walking shoes resonated on their highly glossed flooring. The exhibitions change out often, offering local artists an opportunity. We perused the galleries as wafting air conditioning cooled our brows.

We favored "Luminous Forms: Marble and Bronze Sculptures by Shelley Robzen." The chamber with FABRICation was as a canvas itself. Differing textures, media and presentation throughout this academy beckoned.

Existential asset indeed.

Great day with nature! Very peaceful and relaxing. Looks can be deceiving, there are several residences mixed in with the center but follow the signs and they will lead you right to it. Being able to sit and enjoy the water or walking on the trails is a great way to enjoy your surroundings and see nature at its finest.

Admittedly after thirty years of vacationing here, I finally visited because I really wanted to see the special exhibit about the Unionville Church. Prior reviews mention that the Museum is small, it has short hours and its running on a shoestring.
However, what they do is nice. And, if you are there in the summer, the gardens are lovely, a realy surprise actually. Even if you are not interested in going inside, check out the shady lawns.

Foxwell's Antiques Mall

Not sure what the rave reviews are all about but this place is average at best. There are plenty of commonplace decoys and oyster tins-- and all are overpriced. Do the sellers even look at online pricing??? I guess not. Way too much of the merchandise of flea market quality. If you took out the low quality, barely vintage stuff, you could fit the nice, antique items in about 1/3 of the space. I was in and out in 30 minutes and the only thing I got out of it was a chuckle at the prices.

Vintage Books and Fine Art

Reviewed By Tom S - St. Michaels, Maryland

A friendly, knowledgeable proprietor, a fantastic selection of books on Maryland history, great values on everything from more common volumes to rare treasures... all in a bright, attractive shop near antique stores, art galleries, pubs and restaurants, and the historic Avalon Theatre. Rare maps of the Chesapeake Bay area along with original manuscripts and historic documents keep collectors returning to see what new items have just arrived. One of the most fun stops in beautiful, historic Easton.
