Musee Dunkerque 1940

The entirely renovated museum is located in the fortifications that were built in 1874 to reinforce France’s coastal defence. Bastion 32 served as the headquarters for the French and Allied forces during the Battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo. The Memorial du Souvenir tells the incredible story of the battle and of the evacuation of more than 338.000 allied soldiers from the “Pocket of Dunkirk”. In the museum, you will discover a rich exhibition of maps, pictures and both allied and German military material. Scale models of the sites of the operation, uniforms and weapons complete the collection. A film using dramatic period footage, with a duration of approximately 15 minutes, gives an excellent overall view of the events of May-June 1940.

This Museum was the purpose of our overnight stay in Dunkerque. A chance to reflect & fill in knowledge gaps. We really enjoyed this visit, & thought is was a well laid out usage of the casements. Although as older adults we found all of the presentations interesting to view & read, you can imagine this may not appeal quite so well to the younger button pushing generation who might expect more interactive displays.

Two interesting ships to visit after lunch. First the 3 masted sail training ship originally built for the German Navy and now renamed the Duchesse Anne. But the other is perhaps more interesting - the old Sandettie light vessel built after WW2 for the French lighthouse administration and one of 22 coastal stations reporting for the nightly Shipping Forecast on BBC Radio 4 as well as for the French Maritime Meteo Consult. It was moored on a sandbank off Calais on the East side of the Strait of Dover. Living and working on board was pretty sparse and crew changes quite hazardous. It has now been replaced by a new automated vessel with no engine and now crew powered by solar panels and operated not by the French but by the UK equivalent - Trinity House. I have to say I am partial because the last thing I do at night is listen to the Shipping Forecast.

After viewing the film Dunkirk I just had to see the beach and you have to do that to really comprehend the size and scale of the challenges of the evacuation under Operation Dynamo. Apart from the history it is a very pleasant beach for all things summer tourists like to do with a great variety of bars and restaurants.

Parc Zoologique de Fort Mardyck

Reviewed By medic143 - Dundalk, Ireland

The zoo is very small but it doesnt pretend to be anything else. Before you enter the zoo signs tell you there are about 200 animals. Free parking is available in several lots surrounding the campus.
A bus load of children were leaving as we arrived and during the 1.5 hours we spent there we had the place to ourselves. It is clearly aimed at the younger person and the entry fees are reasonable, €4 for an adult and €10 for 2 adult 2 child family.
The zoo is arranged over a small area enough area so its easy to walk around. About 1/2 the animals on exhibit are birds. The rest are generally small mammals. Dont expect tigers or elephants!
The high light for us were a couple of brown bears near the end of the circuit. They were both very active and seemed happy enough foraging around in their enclosure.
Some of the other animals were far less active, espcially the beavers and otters but that is a chance you take with any zoo.
There is a play area for small children as you walk around. The tea/coffee/hot chocolate machines charge an extremely reasonable €0.50 for a tasty beverage and the bars are mostly <€1 from the candy machines.
Overall it makes for a cheap and enjoyable family outing and I would highly recommend it.

LAAC - Lieu d’Art et Action Contemporaine

It was my first visit to Dunkerque, and I was not impress. However the LAAC save the day for me. The museum has a wonderful collection of contemporaneous Art in a odd building probably of the seventies, completely covered with bathroom tiles. I visited recently the Tate modern in London, and I can say that although the collection is smaller, in terms of quality you can find similar stuff. For example, in the new building of the Tate there is a space devoted to videos of Rebecca Horn; well there is also a room in the LAAC for Rebecca horn. In the third floor, there is a repository with great paintings.

Eglise Saint-Eloi

This church has been destroyed twice, during WW I and WW II. It has been rebuilt after each war. The latest one was completed in 1985. The result today is quite fascinating, as if we were visiting a Gothic church. Several posters provide the historical background with old pictures. Worth the visit.

This is a lovely town hall in the middle of Dunkerque. It stands out with its red bricks.
Inside there is a beautiful stained-glass window. Worthy to see! There are also a lot of photographs of this city on the walls of the Town Hall. It shows that the city is beautiful, which I concur.
Worthwhile to visit

Parc Fort Louis

Reviewed By sneakypeaky - London, United Kingdom

Being in the top 1% on trip advisor I don’t normally write about such places but this was an amazing discovery out side of the typical town centre tourist trail. We needed a park and found an amazing country park constructed around a old fort. On the day it was mostly closed but you could see how great this would be for the children on a hot day in summer. That had play parks, lovely summer walks by the canals and ponds, adventure park, community hall where we saw the masses should their arrows to the targets up high, horse riding, dog training ground, kayaking and a great crazy golf which seemed immaculate. There was also some sort of massive fort event space which I’m sure would be great. All in all it would be a great place for the children to run around if you are there for the weekend! Great place...

Family trip into Dunkirk we thoroughly enjoyed the aquarium. It was ridiculously cheap to go into and only takes about 1 hour to get round if you take your time. Easy parking and near a nice park where we stopped to watch some locals doing Ti Chi.
