The 10 Best Things to do in Diagonal Mar, Catalonia

February 13, 2022 Lashaunda Abraham

Barcelona feels a bit surreal – appropriate, since Salvador Dali spent time here and Spanish Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí designed several of the city’s buildings. Stepping into Gaudí’s Church of the Sacred Family is a bit like falling through the looking glass - a journey that you can continue with a visit to Park Güell. Sip sangria at a sidewalk café in Las Ramblas while watching flamboyant street performers, then create your own moveable feast by floating from tapas bar to tapas bar.

Built by the prestigious Catalan architect, Josep Lluís Mateo, the CCIB (Barcelona International Convention Centre) has been designed so as to give paramount importance to light. Designed as a covered courtyard, the building’s curved metal facade was designed to minimise the building’s environmental impact.

This is one of the best natural history museums I have visited. The building itself is amazing, but the displays are well-organized, well-labeled, well-lit, and very educational. The permanent exhibit shows the evolution of the world and life in the world, uses exhibits focused on themes like movement, skeletons, similarities of species, and the like--rather than showing all primates together and all birds together. The collection shown isn't huge, but it is well displayed. The special exhibit on primates was extremely good, intended to show the variety of primates, how they live, and what threats they face, to encourage people to care about preservation.

Primavera Sound Barcelona

Top international bands and musicians have been attracted to take to the massive stage at the annual Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona. About 100,000 music lovers head to the city in late May or early June for one of the biggest music festivals in Spain to see top global stars such as the late, great Lou Reed, Motorhead, White Stripes, Neil Young, Pulp, and The Cure. It's an interesting mix of musical styles including indie, electronic, pop, jazz, metal, and rock performing on the different outdoor stages and the auditorium, so there's something to suit most music fans. It’s a fun-packed festival, which is not as mainstream or commercial as some. Although there are top artists, you can also see lesser-known acts or hear more avant-garde genres. Plus, there are plenty of food stalls inside the arena by the sea so you can refuel between concerts.

Auditori Forum-CCIB

As seen from the sky, this building, designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & DeMeuron, is a perfect equilateral triangle with 180 m long sides and a height of 25 m, suspended on pillars. Geometric spaces, changing tones depending on the light, glass doors and a metallic kaleidoscopic interior are some of the qualities that make up this building’s strong personality. The shape of the courtyards emerges from the juxtaposition of the two urban design elements of the Cerdà Plan and the stretch of road that is the Diagonal. Its rough blue facade is crisscrossed by different strips of glass that suggest the idea of water running down from the roof. The interiors of the auditorium and exhibition halls are designed to be hybrid spaces. The capacity of the Auditorium is 3,084 people.
