Considering the size of Deming, their museum is very nice. They have an eclectic collection including a doll room, old timers exhibit, native pottery/artifacts, historical Deming artifacts, some old vehicles and more. Best part of all is it is free (donations accepted). We spent about two hours here but you can certainly do it in less. If you happen to be stopping in Deming I recommend a stop at the Luna Mimbres Museum.

Stopped to see the city of rocks. Cool. You can walk hike around and thru Rocks. There are many primitive sites all along border of rocks and maybe 15 sites with electric. Very up to date visitor center and restrooms. Thanks

Very nice winery with gift area and tasting area in appealing decor. Tasted the sweet bulk wine and really liked it. Bought a 64 oz bottle. Wine was $7.50 and $2 for the bottle, that was a bargain. Such a nice time out on our trip to Austin.
Sandra was pouring and she was so sweet and kind!
The over 300 acres of wine grows a huge variety of reds, whites and port.
We especially loved the port paired with chocolate.
Really enjoyed our visit. A 'must stop' on a road trip.

Hands down one of the most historic sites that I have visited with a combination of authenticity, atmosphere and actual ruins. Here was an Indian Wars fort, a historic cemetery, a Butterfield Stage Station and Cooke's Canyon where perhaps 400 people lost their lives and many are still buried in hurried graves from Apache attacks. There are also significant petroglyphs in the canyon and all your expected desert creepy crawlers which we spotted, (tarantulas for examples, and rattlesnakes). There is signage at the fort itself but none for the canyon so you truly need someone to take you in who knows the area. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is a necessity for the canyon portion that ultimately circles back to the road. I would be anxious taking a standard car even as far as Fort Cummings where the dirt road is relatively level. You can easily visualize an overturned stage coach and Apache ambush positions. Archaeology investigations have turned up significant relics from battles and deaths. A local 4-wheel group brought us into the area to appreciate the site with regional historians who shared documented story after story of tragedy from the canyon.

This tiny museum is completely owned and operated by a disabled Viet Nam war veteran who loves rocks. He lives inside the museum building with his cat and he can bend your ear about life philosophy for an hour while you check out all his geodes. He will educate you and sell you his geodes, but he also takes donations of your amount choice to keep up his simple lifestyle. He is a very pleasant person to spend time with.

The Deming Arts Center is always an interesting place to visit. Artists shows change each month, and can include children's art, recycle art, sculpture, glass, and so forth. There is always local art, jewelry, and Mata Ortiz pottery for sale. Deming is rich in artistic talent.

I had spent the day pedaling from Old MesillaNM, and was exhausted from battling mild Westerly headwinds on I-10 going West to my overnight goal of Deming. There was no question that I was going to stop at the first possible chance of something to nourish my worn body, and, after several billboards, I knew it would be Bowlin's Akela Flats! I was a bit concerned that it might close before I get there--it was Sunday, 20NOV2011, with the Sun setting, but I needn't fear. Parking outside, I entered a bright, clean, friendly, WONDERFUL large store/grocery/gas combo with vastly superior bathrooms. Not only was I able to purchased several nutritional (in terms of a hungry bicyclist!) items that included a hot dog, chocolate milk, Frappaccino, Heath candybar, I was also able to buy several postcards indicative of the region. I had to be selective--there is a plethora of crafts, nick-nacks, etc., available.

We were looking for a place to buy peppers from Hatch, New Mexico on our route on Interstate 10. This place was perfect for that. On an earlier trip we did take the drive up north to Hatch. This place allowed us to save time. They had all kinds of red peppers dried and whole as well as ground. They also had ground green peppers. Peppers were clearly marked with the level of heat. I also bought excellent ground cumin which has an amazing fresh flavor. I used the spices in cooking and the food tasted great. Great find on the way from Arizona to Texas through New Mexico.

Starmax is always a fun place. Bowling, golf, games, restaurant and bar, and movie theatre. We were here recently for dinner and a movie. The restaurant menu is fairly limited but adequate. Service is friendly. Food quality had declined since our last visit. Burgers still all right. Fries very soggy and limp and cold inside. When I mentioned to waitress was told they don't have a frier and have to cook in oven. I always cook fries in oven at home and they are crisp. ....just gotta heat oven to correct temperature. Ordered half order of nachos and even though they looked good they tasted funny. They used a weird flavored shredded cheese and no nacho cheese but the chips were soggy. The jalapenos were good. I gave a four star rating because service good and theatre is so nice and comfortable. Seats are comfortable. Price reasonable.
