As a birder, this place was incredible. We woke up to 15 degrees. The heated bird blind was the place to be. We must have seen 3,000 sandhill cranes. There were lots of Gadwalls, mallards, greater white footed goose, northern shovelers, American wigeons and snow goose. Much much more wildlife.

The only place to enjoy the water slides and wave pools in north al. It is a very clean facility. We visit there several times a year. Food is available pizza and fast food. Tubes are available to use at slides. You can rent your float for the lazy river wave pool and just carry it with you. No smoking allowed in the park. It is also great for smaller children also. They have an area designated for the youngsters that is large enough to accommodate the parent also.

It takes about 45 min to go thru. Very well presented. The displays were great. Lots of bugs you've never seen before. It has a small gift section, reasonably priced. If you need something to fill in a little time it's great. And it's free.

The Rose Garden is gorgeous. The park was nice two years ago but has gone down hill and quickly. People allow their children to run wild with no supervision. The tennis courts and bathrooms are destroyed and vandilized regularly and if you don't speak Spanish its a great place to go learn.

This building has been continuously upgraded and brought back to its original form. It shows the original construction and boasts period furniture. David Breland, the historian, is a font of knowledge not only about the Old State Bank, but all of this area. I highly recommend a lengthy visit with David at the Old State Bank.

The Old Decatur & Albany Historic Districts of Decatur make up the largest concentration of Victorian era craftsmen & bungalow homes in Alabama. This is a great little olde town area! The buildings are well kept and really give a nice homey feel. There is construction nearby and that's causing is usual uproar, but I imagine when it gets done, this will be worth a good visit on its own.

I moved here 8 years ago and hoped there would be many museum activities. The Carnegie just does not have enough. They used to have 3rd Fridays with cocktails and art and that is not happening any longer. They need many more artists and variety. More eclectic is needed.

Princess Theatre

Reviewed By ALoldsters - Decatur, Alabama

This is an old movie theatre that has been converted into a performing venue. The place is small (about 700 seats) and intimate place. They have a professional series that features musical acts (folk, bluegrass, big band, etc. acts) plus a number of local activities. The place is attractive inside and you have a good view of the stage because of the small size.

It is a local treasure and if you can get a ticket for an event, go for it. The professional series usually has about 4 to 5 shows a year during the winter months. Tickets are about $30 to 40 per show.

My wife and I have seen lots of great performers, Ray Charles, Arlo Guthrie, The Capitol Steps, Daley and Vincent, Ricky Skaggs, etc.
