Met the owner who came out and greeted my daughter and I as we were perusing the books outside. Went inside for delicious, organic coffee and an eclectic selection of gifts. The book selection was phenomenal and we spent a good amount of time looking through the different genres. Non-fiction, Fiction, kids, movies, games, etc. The owner was friendly, welcoming & helpful. Will definitely stop in again when in the area. A+++

Mt Cammerer Fire Tower

Reviewed By herewewander - Lexington, United States

Loved this hike and ranks highest among our favorites! It’s a little long for some, around 12 miles round trip on the shortest route and closer to 16 on the longer loop version. The 360 view at the top is stunning and well worth it! We parked in the marked biker parking just before the gatehouse at the Cosby campground. Bathrooms nearby in the picnic area just before this parking lot (can easily walk from hiker parking lot). We took the Low Gap Trail up to the Appalachian Trail, then followed signs to Mount Cammerer. The 2.9 miles of the Low Gap Trail are strenuous, all ascent and steep at times. Trail was wide and well marked, though lots of rocks and tree roots (spent as much time watching foot placement as looking around). Levels off at the Appalachian Trail as you walk the ridge another 2.1 miles. Loved seeing grass along the trail at the top (rare in the Smokies). Some rock scramble up to the fire tower trail of about 0.6 miles, but easily doable. AMAZING views from around the restored tower. We hiked with day packs, including water, trail bars, packed lunches and rain jackets. Also took flash lights, just in case. Took the longer Lower Mount Cammer Trail back down. Added more than 5 miles to the return trip. Much narrower and less traveled trail through forest. Surprised to have ascent and descent on this trail. Long day, started around 9:30a, took some breathing breaks on the way up, spent about an hour on the top for lunch and enjoying the view, then back down, reached the parking lot again around 7p. Active 40 year olds in good shape, but it was a long one. Plan for all day hike, take plenty of water and energy bars, pack a lunch. Watch the weather, cloudy mornings sometimes obstruct the view if you arrive too early. Clouds broke just as we reached the ridge around 11:45a. Put this hike on your must do list!

I turned 60 last weekend and just returned from a trip to the Smokies with my daughter. She lives in CA and asked me if we could spend some time together and have some adventure. Equipped with a "new to me" 2017 Jeep Wrangler "Smoky Mountain" edition, I thought why not head to the Smoky Mountains and give it a try. We spent some time in a beautiful campground (Big Creek), but the absolute highlight of our trip was spending the day with Dan @ Outdoor in the Smokies. Dan is the consummate professional. He's incredibly knowledgable about off-road adventure and has put together a classroom style learning environment that my daughter and I really enjoyed. He's also an excellent trainer. He's developed a very nice training format to give people the necessary fundamentals "in-class" and then takes it all to the next level by having us get in our own vehicle and via CB Radio, we follow him and he takes us through his 60 acres of trails. Had I not taken this class, I would have never known what my Jeep (or me) was capable of. This should be a required class for anyone who has bought a 4 wheel vehicle and was simply handed the keys. I have incredible confidence now, knowing all of the details of my vehicle and the "when, why's and how's". My daughter (who doesn't own a jeep) also found it very educational and fun. Shortly after hitting the trails with Dan, we had lunch, went back up into the trails and ended-up renting a log cabin from Dan. The site is very nice, quiet, clean and the perfect way to end a great day. I highly recommend Dan and his 1-day Off-Road instruction. The classroom education in the morning is a little long (but necessary), so I'd probably rule this out for small children, but if you have teems that may be getting behind the wheel, while on the trails - I think they will find it pretty interesting.

We found this place driving around, and were pleasantly surprised! The shop carries everything from emf protection to supplements to light backpacking supplies to old military survival guides. The prices were reasonable and the items were all of quality, definitely the best alternative to the big gimmicky backpacking/hiking supply stores in town. The owner was really cool, resourceful, and knowledgable. She taught us how to properly use a flint— we’d been doing it wrong all these years lol.
