Cattedrale di Conversano

Reviewed By Irene G - Glasgow, United Kingdom

I found my way into this Cathedral by chance. As I sat having my morning coffee I overlooked the side wall of this quite plain building but when I wandered away from the main square and I found the main entrance and enjoyed the serenity of this understated building. For me its most sit-in feature was the circular rose satin glass above the main portal. In the summer heat of Conversano, this was a quiet and cool refuge.

Castello Aragonese

The outside of the castle is beautiful and we were excited to explore the inside. The first floor of this museum was all paintings (less than 10) and they were large but unexceptional. Next after many flights of stairs we were directed to rooms made up of bedding and old fashioned clothes. The guide seemed unhappy to be there and did not speak unless pointing us to another location. We left the museum tired (stairs!) and unimpressed. Not worth the small amount required to enter.

Reviewed By Hitcher84 - Camarillo, California

When this was a convent, the nuns even had a bishop, one of the few churches at the time with a female at such a high position in the Catholic Church. The church itself is a beautiful small church with a distinct bell tower covered in gold and blue plates. The nuns built the bell tower higher than the Cathedral tower to demonstrate their superiority. There is a small archeological museum with Greek era artifacts in the grounds. The site dates back to at least the 11th century, with ancient walls nearby that pre-date Roman times.

Not a very well advertised museum and a little tricky to find. It is on the top floor of a building but there are no signs outside. Nevertheless well worth a visit. Quite a mix of medieval and more modern painting, a Bellini, and some sculpture

We decided we have to try first hand the Pugliese kitchen, so we booked a course/dinner experience with Mara and Marina at DireFareGustare.
It turned out to be a memorble evening for us! We enjoyed it very much, thank to the experteese and easy going ways of both ladies.
We spent almost six hours with them, cooking, baking, and, of course, eating and drinking (wine - what else?) .
We can only reccommend them and their association to whoever wants to really meet the Pugliese kitchen!

Museo Civico Archeologico

Reviewed By Hitcher84 - Camarillo, California

The museum is located in the monastery of San Benedetto, which itself is an archeological site. Most of the visible structure is from the middle ages, but it sits on top of the site of a more ancient site that goes back to ancient greek times. The museum has a small but impressive collection of pottery from the 5th century BC or so. Most of it has been found in the last 30 years, with some of the items unearthed in the 1950s. The ticket cost is includes admission to the castle museum, making a nice compact historical view of the area from two very different time periods. Both are easily seen in one morning or afternoon if you are in the area.
