California Botanic Garden

Reviewed By TravelingMerm - Monrovia, United States

I finally made it out to the gardens now that they opened thanks to the #localadventurechallenge! My previous experience with them was through a yelp elite event and their Taste Wild, so I was expecting a fantastic garden experience and was not disappointed! Even on an insanely hot day, it was worth the walk-around and there was plenty of shade and lovely spots to sit and relax. Buying tickets online was easy and there was plenty of parking. They give you a map to follow when you check in and it was a good general guide that helped differentiate the various garden areas. I opted to walk through all of them except for the desert gardens due to lack of shade there, which they pointed out when I checked in, so that was a very helpful tip! I was lucky enough to time my visit while they have “artists in residence” and their exhibits were so interesting and informative. They even had some pieces to take home with you if you want! I took one that was an illustrated booklet of various SoCal plants, insects and wildlife! So cool! My favorite was the Sensory Garden and Butterfly Garden! The Sensory Garden is an interactive experience that holds various plants you can touch and smell and even taste! I especially liked the Sticky Monkeyflower lol! And the Butterfly Garden was just beautiful - I even learned that the California state insect is a butterfly called California Dogface lol! They also have some lovely ponds and water features. Definitely can’t wait to come back in the spring when everything should be in full blooms!
