Golden Cap Estate

Reviewed By Bear_Tiger - Bromley, United Kingdom

We walked up to Golden Cap from Seatown, it’s about a mile up from the car park in Seatown. A fair climb, but this is the highest point on the south coast! We carried on past Golden Cap and turned right towards St Gabriel’s Wood, and right again back round past Langdon Hill where we did a circuit of the wood and then back down to Seatown. The entire walk was 4.5 miles and took us 1 hour 45 minutes.

Great afternoon at the centre. Went with a friend and our teenage sons for one of the military rifle shooting packages. Top quality facilities and a very friendly bunch of people. Excellent safety, from the COVID precautions through to the range safety. Very well looked after and a very enjoyable afternoon out.

Guided fossil hunting and collecting walks at Charmouth on Dorset's Jurassic Coast with Chris Pamplin B.Sc.

Reviewed By 656tamarn - London, United Kingdom

We just got home from our two days on the Jurassic Coast. Chris was a marvel. My 7 year old was pretty grumpy but he told wonderfully terrible jokes and managed to cheer her up. Chris is knowledgeable and patient and makes it easy. Helped us get the eye for it and by the end if three hours we were seeing fossils everywhere. Really fun and it was spot on for all 3 generations of us.

Hogchester

Hogchester is a beautiful 60 acre site in the Dorset countryside. The rolling hills, meadows, streams and small woodland areas are a haven for wildlife. Some of the fields are undergoing wildflower meadow restoration and conservation work takes place across all areas of the site. Please visit the website for details of open days and events or to enquire about renting the onsite holiday cottage.

We had been looking forward to staying here for so long - and it did not disappoint. The cottage was stylish and spotless, with fabulous comfy beds, and lots of games, toys, books and dvds for the whole family. The family are perfect hosts. It's a spectacular setting, and we spent the majority of each day on the farm, walking in the fields, meeting the animals, adventuring, and generally relaxing. Listening to the owls set off on their hunts at night as the last light disappeared over the sea in the distance ended each day perfectly. Lyme and Charmouth are only 5 minutes away, so there's loads to do on the doorstep - if you can be persuaded to leave the farm!

Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre

The Centre provides information on fossils, fossil hunting and the local coastal and marine wildlife. Facilities at the centre include interactive computers, hands on displays, marine tanks and a video microscope, all of which can help you to discover more about our stretch of the coastline. You will always find a helpful warden or volunteer who can help you identify your fossil finds. The Centre also has disabled access. Our Jurassic Theatre shows a short film on 'The Jurassic Coast and Finding fossils at Charmouth' (adults £1, children 50p). We also have a shop stocked with books for all levels, including some of our own publications, toys and souvenirs. Throughout the year we run guided fossil hunting walks and rockpooling walks along the local coastline. The Centre also has an extensive education programme. For information about the activities we have to offer to school groups please see our Primary Schools and Secondary Schools sections.

We loved this. Amazing fossil hunting guides who were patient, encouraging and enthusiastic (especially Dan) have turned my little girl into a modern day Mary Anning. We found a load of fossils and our children (5&4) are now completely fired up potential palaeontologists (as are their Mum and Dad). Thanks very much Charmouth Heritage Centre!

Charmouth Beach

Reviewed By PhilW937 - Steeple Bumpstead, United Kingdom

Stayed in Charmouth last week and visited the beach every day, sometimes twice a day. Great mix of sand, shingle and rock it's great for rock pooling, fossil hunting or just sunning yourself if the weathers good. Parking is plentiful and not too expensive. Does get busy at times though. Easy walk along the beach to Lyme Regis if you fancy it (Tide Times are displayed in several places) or an invigorating hike up the hill towards Weymouth gives fantastic views of the surrounding area. Couple of little shops and a Heritage Centre. When the tide is low you can venture quite far out for ideal fossil hunting and rock pooling.
