St. Basil's Cathedral

Built by Ivan the Terrible in the 1550s, this intriguing Cathedral bordering Red Square consists of nine separate chapels, each capped with its own individually shaped and colored dome.

Reviewed By Lynn B - Gatineau, Canada

Moscow's iconic St Basil's Cathedral on Red Square is absolutely extraordinary! It is possibly the most unique looking attraction I've ever seen! I loved it!
St Basil's colorful and ornate exterior, with its remarkable onion domes, makes it a recognizable symbol of Moscow around the world. I found the interior also quite unique. It is made up of nine chapels. A maze of galleries takes you from chapel to chapel. The walls are painted in floral and geometric patterns. I recommend going inside!
St Basil's was built by Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century to commemorate a military victory. It became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1990.
Visiting St-Basil's had been on my bucket list for a long time. It was totally worth it!

Red Square (Krasnaya ploshchad)

Red Square, once the site of executions and military parades, sits smack in the middle of Moscow, bounded on one side by the Kremlin walls and Lenin's tomb and on the other by GUM, the country's largest department store.

Reviewed By HelensTravels0 - Pretoria, South Africa

Arguably the Heart of Russia, the Red Square is packed with historical buildings and sites, from the State Museum to St. Basil's Cathedral. You can also see the Kremlin's walls and towers from here. I would recommend an additional night visit to see it all lit up!

Moscow Metro

Riding the city's underground subway system is a sightseeing tour in itself with huge, vaulted, marble-columned stations - some with ornate mosaics and splendid stained glass - designed and decorated by famous Russian architects and sculptors.

Reviewed By Lynn B - Gatineau, Canada

Who knew the underground could be so beautiful? Moscow’s metro stations are ornately decorated and full of unique art and design. Much of it captures historical events. Some metro stations are quite luxurious with splendid halls and chandeliers. The metro stations are treasures in of themselves. The only unfortunate thing is we happened to visit during the rush hour and it got very busy and crowded. On the other hand, it gave us a more authentic experience.

Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin

Reviewed By Dona_Natasha - Suwon, South Korea

This church is called as 'Pokrova Church on Nerliy'. You should park your car in Bogolyubovo railroad station, and cross railroad via overbridge and then go through birch tree forest. And then you can see wide open Russian wild grass field. Very far, you can see this small church, it's 2km distance on foot. Or you can use horse cart with paying money. Narrow path is paved and so pleasant to walk. Many birds fly and guide travellers, and many wild flowers generate fragrants. I liked dry hays smell by wind so much.
Near church, small pond appears, you can see and take fantastic pictures of reflection of the church. This church opens only summer time, during daytime. One grandma who sells candles inside opens door not so early. So, go there after 9~10 o'clock in the morning.
This church was built on mid of 12 century by order of Bogolyubskiy, and it's a unesco cultural heritage. It's called the most beautiful church in Russia.
If you are baptized by Russian othordox, then you can write down and leave your family names for pray. You can light candles inside, too.
It's better riding on the horse cart on your way back, pay money to two young girls and enjoy passing through journey on wild grass field.

Wonderful muzeym,in a mansion of 1908 art nouveau

Transfiguration monastery

Reviewed By Koshara

Don`t you miss this Monastery on your Murom attractions list, first, it`s got an excellent view of the Oka river, second it`s territory is bigger than other sites and well maintained, with trees, flowers, vegetables and what not, third, here you see an excellent restoration job, the kind of Moscow-scale and actually said to be effected on money coming from Moscow, and, last but not least, it`s got a famous icon of the Virgin Good Listener brought from holy mount Athos in Greece, then, they hold a true piece of St.Nicholas relic and a piece of a finger of local saint Ilya of Murom (Ilya Muromets), the Russian peasant warrier, patron of the Russian lands known from traditional fairy tales and modern Russian cartoons. This monastery is mentioned in the Russian chronicles as early as 1095/96, and some of its stone buildings date of Ivan the Terrible visit in 1554, its helmet-shaped Transfiguration Cathedral is considered the oldest in Murom. Amasingly peaceful place, the kind you feel you can pray and speak to the heaven

Yaroslavl Embankment

Reviewed By retireeVancouver - Vancouver

,I strolled just a short section of this embankment Promenade, probably the prettiest part. This section overlooked the Yaroslavl Millennium Park with its Fountains and Yaroslavl Millennium Monument and was in the vicinity of the Assumption Church. Along this stretch a white columnar folly looking like a small Greek Temple was an obvious sight. Couples liked to attach locks on the black wrought iron fence that surrounded it as a show of their love for each other. Many of the locks have inscriptions making this an interesting stop. At this point on the walkway, a good view of the many green domes of the St. John Church can be seen and makes for a good photo with the Yaroslavl Millennium Monument in the foreground. Some vendors have kiosks with souvenirs for sale along here. The area is attractive with several floral beds filled with colorful seasonal annuals; one even had a design of Yaroslavl's symbol, the brown bear in it. The walkway at this point was treed, shady, with nice views either to the park and the Assumption Church, over to the spit and the Church of St. John, or along the Volga River with its industrial section evident in the distance. The evenly paved walkway was wide so dodging others on it was not an issue. I enjoyed my short time on the Yaroslavl Promenade and the sights seen from several vantage points.

Cathedral of the Assumption (Uspensky Sobor)

Reviewed By Frickelbude - Dusseldorf, Germany

Well churches and cathedrals are landmarks of every Russian city, and this one is definitely the nicest and biggest in Smolensk.
Some may say - see one and you've seen them all... May be - but this one, although "same", manages to still pose a difference... Situated on a hill above the wall part lining the river, from its place a view to the walls (where you must go too, if only to just look back) is very worth stopping for and snapping a photo.
And the Cathedral and its stairs still look a bit different from the average worship place, maybe because of the slightly different architecture..
Be prepared that as with all in Smolensk, this one is still being repaired...

The most beautiful monastry in this region. White swans and black swans are playing in the pond. Very famous Tolgaski icon you can see. Calm and pure atmosphere. You can say you've been in Russian monastry if you've been here any once. You can feel satisfaction mentally in your mind when you step out from this holy place.

Visited this beautiful gallery in October with friends. Huge collection of Soviet (mostly) porcelain I knew nothing about. Stunning lacquer miniature of Palekh, Fedoskino, Mstera, Kholyi. Great thanks to Yuri Marushkin, the founder and owner of the gallery. He takes you on a tour, tells the story of these great crafts, answers all possible questions.
