The 10 Best Things to Do in Carencro, United States

September 5, 2017 Enedina Augsburger

Carencro (/ˈkærənkroʊ/; historically French: St.-Pierre) is a small city in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is a suburb of the nearby city of Lafayette. The population was 7,526 at the 2010 census, up from 6,120 in 2000. Its name is derived from the Cajun French word for buzzard: the spot where the community was settled was one where large flocks of buzzards roosted in the bald cypress trees. The name means "carrion crow."

If you are in the area this tour is a must. It is an all in one, day tour of the Cajun heart land. Breakfast at Prejean's Restaurant is the first stop and it is GREAT. The rest of the day included a swamp tour, city tour, and cemetery tour of Breaux Bridge and was AWESOME. You might even get to hear your tour guide Play accordion and sing authentic Cajun music! They offer another tour of TABASCO. I have not been on that one but I am sure it is just as good as the Breaux Bridge tour.

St Charles Borromeo Church

Reviewed By Michael W - Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Duplicate of church built by Jesuits in Carencro, no far away. Church has served the area for many many years. While not as ornate as the Catholic church in St. Martinville, it still is a wonderful change from the modern structures that religions want to build now days. Stained glass is old school and you will simply not see any quality like this in a modern church.

Ceiling is reminiscent of many you see in Europe. Paintings all well done and maintained. Up front is the altar with the usual statues. Changed somewhat from what was there in the 60s and 70s and even earlier. Just cannot avoid change even if it detracts from history.

There is a side chapel area and also a second side chapel converted to a glassed in cry room on either side of the altar.

If meandering through cajun country, it is well worth a stop and look around.

I do not remember if it is handicapped accessible, but must be with all the old parishioners.

If the weather is cooperative take a short walk through the old cemetery.

de la Houssaye's Swamp Tours

Reviewed By Richard F - Lakeside, MT

I've read all of the reviews, and actually there is probably a grain of truth in the bad ones. I found it interesting that the were ZERO four star reviews. Well, I'm giving him four stars. To me, a five star rating suggests that there is almost no room for improvement and that the experience was almost perfect. Hard to imagine that here. However, it was a good tour, especially for the money, and we're glad we went. DLH gave us a good two hour tour which was very entertaining and informative. Yes, he did pontificate on the government and private industry screwing up the environment, apparently with a profit motive in mind. It was actually pretty interesting and we just listened to what he had to say and didn't particularly engage him on this.

There has been much talk about the boat. The boat was solid and the engine was OK, at least the day we went out. The boards holding the seats sagged a little bit, but the seats themselves were fine. They are of a pretty stock variety virtually identical to the one I have on my boat, only these swivel.

DLH brought his five dogs with him on this trip. They were well behaved and we rather enjoyed them. I could easily see where someone might see this as a negative.

He can be a little curt/abrasive. I guess this is just who he is and I didn't let it bother me. He seemed very knowledgeable about all aspects of the tour and we felt we got our money's worth. Speaking of money, his published price for a two hour tour is $20, $10 for seniors. This would have meant our cost would be $30 for two hours work. I would have been embarrassed to pay that. We gave him $50 and he seemed satisfied.

Martins Accordions

We stopped in to see the miniature handmade custom accordions we had heard about from the locals. We saw, heard and learned so much more! After hearing about the original European accordions that had brought traditional music to Canada and then to Louisiana, the music morphed from Cajun and Creole to Zeydeco, each with a distinct sound. The music is composed and played by ear and passed on through families. We joined a tour group for an amazing evening concert by three family members, playing accordion, rhythm guitar and steel guitar. This group has won national acclaim with their unique sound. The group leader is the grandson of the owner and is an awesome talent. Don't miss a chance to visit this hidden gem!

Excellent tour. Lake Martin is very beautiful and concentrates lots of different landscapes (swamp, marsh, open water) in a small area. Tour was 2 hour-long with a fun guy named Shawn who told jokes AND let us enjoy the silence and beauty of the place. One of our best memories of Louisiana and definitely our best swamp tour. Service was also impeccable, thank you Shelly!
