We heard about the caves at Bocairent and wanted to go see them. According to archeologists, they were carved from the stone mountains sometime around the 9th or 10th century. Because the carvings opened "windows" to the outside of the mountain, none of the spaces felt claustrophobic. Some of the openings to go from one cavern to the next are small, and some require you to almost crawl, yet they still seemed open and airy. Because the hard stone is cut away, it's not really uncomfortable to climb through the caves. The views out the mountainside openings were wonderful and framed pictures of the monastery across the valley. We met some people who'd grown up in Bocairnet and at the time, the caves were their playground as children. It was a fun and fascinating couple hours touring the site. The conservators have done a great job of making the caves easily accessible. This place is well worth a visit and off the beaten track. It is adjacent to a charming mountain top village, Bocairent.
